Job Summary



The NICU Staff Nurse provides specialized nursing care to critically ill newborns and premature babies, ensuring continuous monitoring, timely interventions, and family-centered support.

GNM / B.Sc Nursing (Registered Nurse)

Specialized training or experience in NICU preferred. Knowledge of neonatal emergencies and resuscitation (NRP preferred).

Key Responsibilities

A. Clinical Care

Provide intensive nursing care to neonates requiring high-dependency support. Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, ABGs, and maintain detailed charting. Perform neonatal procedures: gavage feeding, phototherapy, suctioning, CPAP care, IV cannulation, etc. Assist doctors during resuscitation, emergencies, and procedures. Administer medications safely according to neonatal dosing guidelines.

Equipment Management

Manage and operate incubators, ventilators, CPAP, infusion pumps, warmers, and monitors.

C. Family Support & Communication



Educate and update parents on infant condition, feeding, kangaroo care, and discharge instructions. Provide emotional support to families.

D. Documentation & Compliance



Maintain neonatal charts, medication records, intake-output, feeds, and growth charts. Report critical events, medication errors, and follow NICU protocols & NABH standards. Ensure proper sterilization and infection prevention practices.

Qualifications



GNM / B.Sc Nursing (Registered Nurse). Experience in pediatric or PICU settings preferred. Training in PALS/NRP is an added advantage.

Provide intensive nursing care to children with critical illnesses, trauma, or postoperative needs.

B. Equipment Handling



Operate pediatric ventilators, defibrillators, infusion pumps, monitors, and suction devices. Ensure equipment functionality and prompt reporting of issues.

C. Communication & Family Coordination



Update families on child condition in a compassionate and clear manner. Educate parents regarding care plans, infection precautions, and discharge instructions.

D. Documentation & Safety Compliance



Maintain paediatric charts, medication records, fluid balance charts, and assessment notes. Follow PICU protocols, infection control guidelines, and NABH requirements. Report incidents, near-miss events, and participate in quality audits. Monitor vital signs, neurological status, fluid balance, ventilatory parameters, and cardiac rhythms. Administer IV medications, infusions, blood products, and manage paediatric dosing accurately. Assist in pediatric emergencies including CPR, intubation support, and stabilization. Provide post-operative and post-procedure care.
