The NICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to premature and critically ill newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role involves continuous monitoring, safe administration of treatment, use of neonatal equipment, maintaining infection control, and providing emotional support to parents while ensuring high standards of neonatal care.
Key Responsibilities:
Neonatal Care & Nursing Duties:
Provide 24/7 care to premature and critically ill neonates in the NICU.
Monitor and record vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, and overall baby health.
Administer medications, IV fluids, and nutrition as prescribed by neonatologists.
Operate and maintain neonatal medical equipment such as incubators, ventilators, and monitors.
Ensure strict infection control and maintain a sterile environment at all times.
Assist doctors during neonatal procedures, resuscitations, and emergencies.
Support and guide parents on feeding methods, baby care, and discharge instructions.
Maintain accurate nursing notes, reports, and records of each neonate.
Coordinate with pediatricians, lab, pharmacy, and other departments for seamless patient care.
Provide compassionate, safe, and evidence-based neonatal nursing care.
Registers & Documentation:
Maintain and update the following NICU records accurately:
Admission Register
- Details of newborn admissions to NICU.
Monitoring Chart
- Hourly records of vitals, temperature, and oxygen levels.
Medication & Feeding Chart
- Records of IV fluids, feeds, and medications administered.
Equipment Usage Register
- Tracking incubators, ventilators, and other NICU devices.
Indent Register
- Requisition for medicines, disposables, and neonatal supplies.
Discharge & Transfer Register
- Details of babies discharged or transferred from NICU.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Diploma / B.Sc. in Nursing with valid registration under the Nursing Council.
Minimum 2 years of experience in NICU or pediatric care (freshers with interest in neonatal care may apply).
Strong knowledge of neonatal health, baby care, and emergency management.
Compassionate, patient-focused, and emotionally strong.
Excellent observation, communication, and teamwork skills.
Work Conditions:
Rotational shifts as per hospital schedule.
Exposure to critical and emotionally sensitive medical cases.
Continuous coordination with doctors and NICU team.
