Monitor vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, oxygen saturation) continuously.
Assess newborns for signs of distress, complications, or changes in condition.
Interpret data from monitors, lab results, imaging, and communicate findings to physicians.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of patient status and interventions.
Clinical & Technical Care
Administer medications, fluids, and nutrition (including IVs, total parenteral nutrition, enteral feedings).
Manage respiratory support including ventilators, CPAP, oxygen therapy.
Insert and manage lines (e.g. umbilical lines, peripheral IVs), catheters, and other invasive devices.
Provide thermal regulation (incubators, radiant warmers), phototherapy, and other supportive interventions.
Perform procedures such as blood draws, suctioning, intubation support, chest tube care, etc.
Change dressings, manage wound care, and maintain sterile technique to prevent infections.
High-risk Delivery / Resuscitation Support
Be present or on standby during high-risk deliveries, especially if newborn complications are anticipated.
Assist in neonatal resuscitation (e.g. airway management, chest compressions).
Facilitate immediate stabilization and transfer to NICU care.
Care Planning & Coordination
Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and other specialists to develop and revise care plans.
Participate in rounds, case conferences, and family care planning.
Coordinate admissions, discharges, and transfers of infants.
Family Communication & Education
Communicate effectively with parents/families: explain condition, plan of care, prognosis, procedures, and address concerns.
Educate families in newborn care, feeding, special care needs after discharge.
Provide emotional support to families under stress.
Quality, Safety & Infection Control
Follow protocols, checklists, and policies to ensure patient safety (e.g. medication safety, alarm checks).
Maintain strict infection control measures (hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, isolation procedures).
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and root-cause analyses.
Inventory & Equipment Management
Monitor, calibrate, and maintain equipment (monitors, ventilators, incubators).
Ensure supplies are available, restocked, and safe for use.
Report malfunctioning equipment and coordinate repairs.
Documentation & Reporting
Document all assessments, interventions, medications, and infant growth and development metrics.
Prepare shift handover reports, escalate concerns or changes to appropriate staff.
Submit incident, adverse event, or near-miss reports as necessary.
Professional Development & Training
Stay updated with neonatal care best practices, guidelines, and protocols.
Mentor junior nurses, participate in in-service training, workshops, and certification programs.
Maintain required certifications (e.g. Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Advanced Life Support, etc.).
