They manage staff, coordinate coverage, and work with other departments to ensure the final product meets publication standards before it is released to the public. Core responsibilities
Story management:
Assigning articles to reporters and managing deadlines to ensure timely publication.
Editing:
Reviewing and editing content for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and style, including headlines and captions.
Editorial planning:
Overseeing the editorial calendar, planning content, and setting the news desk's priorities.
Legal and ethical compliance:
Ensuring all published content adheres to journalistic standards, ethics, and legal guidelines.
Staff guidance:
Providing feedback and mentorship to junior staff, and collaborating with reporters on story development.
Coordination:
Liaising with other departments like photography, design, and production to coordinate content creation and workflow.
Breaking news:
Coordinating the newsroom's response to breaking news events.
