Position Overview:
We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented MIM NPI Quality Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will oversee the quality control processes for the introduction of new MIM products, ensuring that all products meet required specifications, industry standards, and customer expectations throughout their lifecycle. This role involves close collaboration with product design, engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure high-quality metal injection molded (MIM) parts are successfully developed and launched.
Key Responsibilities:
New Product Introduction (NPI) Support:
Lead quality activities for new MIM products from concept through production launch.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, engineering, and production, to ensure the design and manufacturing process meet product specifications and are optimized for quality.
Review product designs, material selection, and manufacturing processes to identify potential risks and quality challenges during the NPI phase.
Material and Process Validation:
Work with the engineering and materials teams to validate MIM materials, ensuring they meet the required performance and mechanical properties for the intended application.
Validate MIM processes, including powder feeding, injection molding, debinding, sintering, and post-processing, to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency.
Optimize MIM processes to minimize defects and improve cycle time while maintaining high-quality standards.
Tooling and Equipment Validation:
Ensure that tooling, molds, and equipment are designed, built, and tested to meet product specifications.
Involve in tooling trials, process simulations, and prototype runs to validate product design and process parameters.
Work with the tooling team to resolve issues and improve tool performance, ensuring high-quality outputs in mass production.
Quality Control and Inspection:
Develop and implement inspection criteria and standards for incoming materials, in-process inspections, and final product inspection.
Conduct inspections and testing (e.g., dimensional analysis, mechanical testing, material characterization) to ensure that parts meet required specifications and industry standards.
Perform first article inspections (FAI) and ensure that parts meet customer requirements before the product enters mass production.
Root Cause Analysis and Problem Solving:
Identify, analyze, and resolve quality issues or non-conformances during the NPI phase, using tools such as root cause analysis, FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), and 8D reports.
Work closely with the production and engineering teams to implement corrective actions and preventive measures for identified quality issues.
Lead investigations of process or product failures, including material, design, or manufacturing issues, and ensure timely resolution to avoid delays in NPI timelines.
Supplier Qualification and Management:
Collaborate with suppliers to ensure that raw materials and components (e.g., metal powders, binders) meet required specifications and quality standards.
Support the supplier qualification process, including audits, material testing, and validation of new materials and processes.
Monitor and track supplier performance to ensure consistent product quality throughout the production lifecycle.
Documentation and Reporting:
Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, including test reports, quality control plans, process validation records, and FAI reports.
Report quality status, progress, and potential risks to management and stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.
Ensure compliance with quality standards, regulations (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949), and industry certifications.
Continuous Improvement:
Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the MIM process, reduce defects, and improve product quality and efficiency.
Use data-driven methodologies such as Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing to improve process stability, reduce scrap, and increase yield rates.
Identify opportunities for cost reduction while maintaining or improving product quality and process efficiency.
Training and Development:
Provide training and technical support to the production and quality teams on MIM processes, material handling, and quality standards.
Promote a culture of quality awareness, ensuring that all team members understand their role in meeting quality standards.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
5+ years of experience in quality engineering within the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) industry or a related manufacturing field.
Strong knowledge of MIM processes, including powder injection molding, debinding, sintering, and post-processing.
Familiarity with quality management systems and standards (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949).
Proficient in quality control tools and techniques, such as SPC (Statistical Process Control), FMEA, root cause analysis, and 8D problem-solving.
Experience with dimensional measurement tools, including CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), micrometers, and other precision inspection devices.
Knowledge of mechanical testing methods, such as tensile strength, hardness testing, and porosity analysis.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC), first article inspections (FAI), and root cause analysis tools (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams).
Experience with statistical analysis tools and methods (SPC, Minitab, MP etc.).
Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
