Job Description

Job Responsibilities:-

1.

Advanced Diagnostic and Laboratory Operations

M.Sc. Medical Microbiologists are primary actors in identifying disease-causing agents from human clinical specimens.

Pathogen Identification:

Processing samples of blood, tissue, and body fluids to detect bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.

Specialized Testing:

Using advanced molecular techniques such as

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)

for rapid diagnosis of conditions like tuberculosis and viral infections, and conducting

ELISA

for serological testing.

Antimicrobial Sensitivity Testing (AST):

Determining which antibiotics are most effective against a specific infection, which is vital for managing drug-resistant cases in India.

Reporting and Documentation:

Analyzing and interpreting test data to prepare detailed diagnostic reports for treating physicians.

2. Hospital Infection Control and Surveillance

In 2026, these professionals are deeply involved in maintaining hospital safety standards.

Sterility Audits:

Conducting environmental monitoring and hygiene audits in critical areas like Operation Theatres (OTs) and Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

Outbreak Investigation:

Monitoring for clusters of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and collaborating on disease outbreak investigations.

Biosafety Management:

Serving as

Biosafety Officers

, they ensure the safe handling and storage of infectious specimens and develop safety protocols to protect hospital staff from exposure.

3. Antimicrobial Stewardship and Clinical Support

M.Sc. graduates support the judicious use of antibiotics to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major health challenge in India.

Treatment Advice:

Collaborating with clinical teams to guide appropriate antimicrobial therapy based on laboratory findings.

Specimen Advisory:

Advising healthcare workers on the correct methods and timing for sample collection to ensure accuracy in results.

4. Research, Training, and Quality Assurance

M.Sc. Medical Microbiology is a research-intensive degree, and hospitals leverage this for internal improvements.

Quality Control (QC):

Implementing and overseeing quality assurance protocols to ensure diagnostic tests meet NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) standards.

Training Staff:

Training laboratory technicians and junior staff on aseptic techniques and the operation of sophisticated laboratory equipment.

Medical Research:

Engaging in clinical research on infectious disease mechanisms and local resistance patterns.
