Job Description

1. General Role of MEP Engineer in Retail Industry



An MEP Engineer ensures that all building services (Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Firefighting, etc.) are properly designed, installed, tested, and maintained to support safe and efficient retail operations. In retail (malls, showrooms, supermarkets, chain stores), they ensure systems meet customer comfort, safety, and operational requirements while being cost-effective and compliant with standards.

2. Electrical Engineer - Roles & Responsibilities



Design & Planning



Prepare electrical layout drawings (lighting, power, cabling, emergency systems).

Load calculation, power distribution, and equipment sizing.

Coordinate with utility providers for approvals and power connections.

Ensure energy-efficient lighting and power solutions to reduce operating costs.

Installation & Supervision



Oversee installation of electrical systems (switchboards, wiring, lighting fixtures, UPS, DG sets, elevators, escalators power).

Ensure proper installation of backup systems (generators, UPS, inverters).

Supervise vendors/contractors during store fit-outs or new branch openings.

Safety & Compliance



Ensure compliance with local electrical codes and safety standards (IS, IEC, NFPA).

Implement earthing, lightning protection, and fire alarm integration.

Conduct routine electrical safety audits.

Operation & Maintenance



Manage preventive and corrective maintenance of electrical systems.

Monitor power consumption, optimize energy usage, and introduce energy-saving systems (LED, sensors, timers).

Troubleshoot electrical issues to prevent downtime during store operations.

3. Plumbing Engineer - Roles & Responsibilities



Design & Planning



Design water supply, drainage, sewerage, and stormwater systems for retail spaces.

Plan plumbing for washrooms, pantries, HVAC make-up water, firefighting hydrants, and sprinkler systems.

Ensure water pressure balance and pump sizing.

Installation & Supervision



Oversee installation of piping, pumps, valves, water tanks, and sanitary fittings.

Supervise plumbing contractors during construction and fit-outs.

Coordinate with civil team for shaft, duct, and plumbing provisions.

Safety & Compliance



Ensure compliance with plumbing codes, health, and safety standards.

Maintain water quality (potable water, filtered water supply).

Integrate plumbing systems with fire protection (hydrants, sprinklers).

Operation & Maintenance



Preventive maintenance of pumps, valves, and piping.

Troubleshoot leakages, blockages, or water supply interruptions.

Ensure efficient use of water (low-flow fixtures, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling where applicable).

4. Coordination & Retail-Specific Responsibilities



Store Fit-Outs & New Openings



Work with architects, interior designers, and project managers for smooth integration of MEP services into retail layouts.

Ensure minimal disruption to store aesthetics while meeting utility needs.

Facility Management



Support facility managers in day-to-day retail operations.

Manage AMC (Annual Maintenance Contracts) for lifts, HVAC, DG, and fire systems.

Customer Comfort & Experience



Ensure lighting, water supply, and safety systems enhance customer shopping experience.

Maintain clean restrooms, safe escalators/lifts, and uninterrupted power/water.

Cost & Energy Management



Suggest and implement energy-efficient solutions (LED retrofits, smart water meters).

Control operational costs while ensuring uninterrupted services.

Educational Qualification



Bachelor's Degree (B.E. / B.Tech.) in

Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)

Mechanical Engineering (with MEP specialization)

Diploma in Electrical / Mechanical / Plumbing (for junior-level positions).

Additional Certifications (added advantage):



AutoCAD / Revit MEP

Electrical Safety Certification

Plumbing & Sanitary Systems Design Training

Firefighting & Fire Alarm System Certification

Energy Management / Green Building (LEED, IGBC).

Technical Skills



Strong knowledge of MEP design codes & standards (IS, IEC, NFPA, NBC).

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, MS Project, and Excel for planning and reporting.

Knowledge of HVAC, firefighting, and building management systems (for coordination).

Familiar with load calculation, water demand calculation, pump sizing, and energy optimization.

Experience:

3-7 years.
