Job Description

Clinical Support:

Provide technical expertise in the calibration, maintenance, and quality assurance of diagnostic equipment used for eye exams, such as slit lamps, fundus cameras, OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) systems, and refractors. Ensure proper functioning and safety of therapeutic equipment like lasers and low vision aids, advising on best practices for safe operation. Assist in troubleshooting and solving technical issues related to equipment malfunction.

Research Support:

Collaborate with faculty and researchers on the design and implementation of research studies involving optical systems, including optical coherence tomography, adaptive optics, and other emerging technologies. Support research in optical physics and instrumentation, contributing to the development of novel diagnostic tools and treatments.

Educational Contributions:

Teach courses or workshops on the principles of medical physics as applied to optometry and vision science, providing students with a strong understanding of the physical concepts behind optical devices. Mentor graduate students and researchers in projects involving medical physics and optical instrumentation.

Compliance and Safety:

Ensure that all clinical and research activities comply with national standards for radiation safety, equipment calibration, and patient safety regulations. Conduct regular quality control and safety checks on imaging and therapeutic devices, reporting on performance and any potential hazards.

Technology Management:

Manage the acquisition, installation, and upgrades of new optical and diagnostic equipment, working with vendors and technicians. Stay current on advancements in optometric technologies and medical physics, advising the institution on new tools that could enhance patient care and research capabilities.

Collaboration:

Work with multidisciplinary teams including optometrists, engineers, researchers, and clinicians to provide insight into the application of physics in vision care. Participate in regular departmental meetings and contribute to strategic planning in the development of future technologies for the optometry program.

Qualifications:

Education:

Master's or Ph.D. in Medical Physics, Physics, Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on optics, biomedical instrumentation, or medical physics applications in vision care.

Experience:

Previous experience in medical physics, particularly in the areas of optical systems, imaging technologies, and instrumentation used in eye care is highly preferred. Hands-on experience with diagnostic equipment used in optometry and ophthalmology (e.g., OCT, retinal imaging systems, autorefractors, visual field analyzers) is a plus.

Skills:

Strong knowledge of optics, light interactions with biological tissues, and medical imaging systems. Familiarity with software tools for data analysis, simulation, and modeling of optical systems. Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner to students, faculty, and clinical staff.

Certifications (Preferred):

Certification by a recognized medical physics organization (e.g., ABMP, AAPM) is preferred but not required.

Key Attributes:

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical and academic environment. Detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to accuracy and patient safety. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Passion for teaching and mentoring students in the field of medical physics.
