RMO (MBBS doctor)

managing the

ICU and Emergency Department

in such a setting:

General Responsibilities:

Patient Monitoring:

Monitor vitals, consciousness level, and general condition. Document and report changes to consultants/specialists promptly. Implement doctor's orders for medication, IV fluids, and oxygen therapy.

Emergency Management:

Perform initial assessment and stabilization of patients arriving in emergency. Manage common emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, trauma, poisoning, stroke) as per ACLS/BLS protocols. Call and coordinate with on-call specialists for further management.

ICU Care:

Monitor ventilated and non-ventilated ICU patients. Titrate oxygen and medications (inotropes, sedatives, etc.) under guidance. Perform and assist in procedures like intubation, central line insertion (if trained), ABG analysis.

Documentation:

Maintain accurate, real-time documentation of clinical notes, progress reports, and treatment plans. Ensure NABH-compliant documentation, consent forms, and checklists (surgical safety, crash cart checks, etc.).

Communication:

Liaise between patients, their families, nursing staff, and senior consultants. Deliver updates to families sensitively and clearly. Escalate deteriorating patient conditions to seniors promptly.

Code Blue Response:

Be a first responder to Code Blue situations (cardiac/respiratory arrest). Administer CPR/ACLS and assist the emergency response team.

Medicolegal Responsibilities:

Handle medico-legal cases (MLC) as per protocol: documentation, informing police, collecting samples. Maintain chain of custody and patient confidentiality.

Shift Handover:

Provide detailed handover to incoming RMO at shift change.
Skills and Training Typically Required:

MBBS with registration (MCI/NMC & state council)

BLS and ACLS certification

Experience in

NABH-Specific Expectations:

Participation in hospital audits, quality indicators, and internal trainings. Adherence to SOPs, especially those related to infection control, consent, waste disposal, medication administration, and patient rights. Ensure checklists and formats (e.g., SOAP notes, early warning scores) are properly filled.
