The Mechanical Engineer in the shipbuilding industry is responsible for the design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems on ships and offshore structures. This role ensures that all mechanical components meet classification society rules, statutory regulations, and project specifications while adhering to quality, safety, and timeline requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Design, review, and execute shipboard mechanical systems such as
piping, HVAC, propulsion, pumps, valves, engines, and auxiliary machinery
.
Coordinate with
hull, electrical, and outfitting teams
to ensure smooth integration of mechanical systems.
Supervise installation, alignment, testing, and commissioning of mechanical equipment onboard vessels.
Prepare and review
technical drawings, material specifications, calculations, and test procedures
.
Ensure compliance with
classification society rules
(ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, BV, IRS, etc.) and statutory regulations.
Conduct inspections, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis during construction and sea trials.
Monitor vendor performance, review vendor drawings, and support procurement and material inspections.
Ensure adherence to
HSE standards
, quality control procedures, and project schedules.
Support dry dock repairs, retrofits, and modification projects as required.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's Degree in
Mechanical Engineering
(Marine Engineering preferred).
2-8 years
of experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or marine/offshore projects.
Strong knowledge of
marine mechanical systems and ship construction processes
.
Familiarity with
SOLAS, IMO regulations, and class rules
.
Proficiency in
AutoCAD / ShipConstructor / CAD tools
(as applicable).
Good communication and coordination skills for site and vendor interaction.
