Mechanical Engineer will participate in the development of DAQ, sensors, etc. to support the digitalization of products and associated systems at Smiths. Responsibilities will include experimental R&D activities, such as identifying the physics of the measurement required, specifying the sensors, design, prototype, and production set up activities for Smiths Digital Forge products, collaborating with suppliers to develop or customize sensors, designing the test setup to evaluate DAQ, sensors, qualifying them and potentially partnering with 3rd party to commercialize them. This includes serving as the lead authority supporting sensor development. Duties & Responsibilities What you'll do: Utilize your experience and understanding in the application of principles, theories, concepts, practices, and standards relating tosensor design. Perform modelling and simulation in support of design and analysis activities (ie magnetic sensors) Participate in experimental testing in support of design and analysis activities. Be responsible for participating in the negotiation of technical requirements with suppliers. Provide deliverables within schedule and budgetary constraints. Successfully work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, teaming environment. Works closely with the Project Manager and Engineers to ensure program success Develops, presents, and delivers comprehensive design material presentations to the project team, executive management, and customer representatives in a clear and concise manner Oversees certification qualification and delivery of products and services offered to the Smiths divisions Recommends cost-effective solutions to maintain infrastructure and related systems Works on unusually complex problems and provides creative and innovative solutions Researches and analyzes emerging technologies, techniques, and protocols and makes recommendations The Individual What you'll definitely need: Min 4 years' experience working in development environments Bachelor or Masters in mechanical/electrical engineering, physics, computer science, analytical chemistry, or equivalent practical experience Must possess a solid understanding of sensors/data acquisition systems engineering and development Must be comfortable working on multiple systems and components simultaneously in various configurations Must have strong verbal and written communications skills Must be committed to adopting and adhering to best practices Must be able to effectively plan and prioritize tasking and communicate clearly regarding technical options and trade-offs Must be capable of performing high quality work both independently and with a team, in a fast-moving Agile development environment Experience with certifying bodies and certification processes (e.g. UL, ATEX, IECEx, CSA,FCC, EMI) Experience with performance, reliability, and regulatory testing Expertise in Electro-Mechanical Design (including SolidWorks) Experience with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), including microfabrication techniques, materials, best practices Knowledge of a wide variety of technologies to include Image processing and Digital Signal processing, cloud infrastructure, virtualization, machine learning, software applications, web technologies, and cybersecurity Image chain analysis to include sensor modeling, signal quality and noise, optics, detector calibration, and image processing of pixel data. Understanding and application of image quality standards (e.g. NIIRS), scales, metrics and image quality equations. Significant applied knowledge of sensor imaging systems, products, and exploitation processes Strong understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle to include independent testing and data verification Experience complying with all applicable security and information assurance (IA) / cybersecurity policies and directives Experience managing high-quality product delivery Strong analytical, problem-solving, consultation and organizational skills Excellent communication and presentation skills with technical and non-technical groups Track record of delivering successful sensor related R&D projects and prototypes To find out more about life at Smiths Detection check out our LinkedIn pageand follow our story Join us for a great career and competitive compensation & benefits whilst keeping the world a safer place.
