About the role
Job Title: Manager - Legal Counsel (Contracts)
The Counsel is an experienced legal professional who bridges handson delivery with strategic oversight. The role provides advanced support across global contracting and governance workstreams, acts as subject matter expert (SME) in designated domains, and mentors' junior talent to uplift quality, speed, and consistency from Haleon's Legal Shared Services Centre in Bengaluru. The Counsel manages complex and nonstandard matters independently, driving riskbased advice, standardization, and continuous improvement in partnership with cross functional teams.
Key responsibilities
Contracting & Advisory:
Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements (e.g., services, technology/SaaS, marketing, clinical/vendor, supply and distribution), applying playbooks and risk frameworks to reach pragmatic positions.
Provide SME guidance in the assigned domain(s), including issue spotting, risk articulation, and business enabling solutions.
Own nonstandard clauses and structures (indemnities, liability regimes, data/procurement terms, audit rights, governance, exit/transition) with clear escalation thresholds.
Governance, Risk & Compliance:
Ensure adherence to Haleon policies, templates, and governance controls (privacy/confidentiality, records retention, approvals, delegation of authority).
Partner with Compliance, Privacy, Procurement, Finance, and Commercial on risk management, controls testing/strengthening, and continuous improvement.
Contribute to playbook evolution and knowledge assets based on recurring patterns and post matter reviews.
Operational Excellence & Technology:
Champion CLM/workflow/document automation usage and adoption; surface automation candidates and metrics; help design SOPs for scale.
Track and report SLAs, throughput, cycle time, and quality; drive root cause remediation and standardization across jurisdictions.
People Leadership & Mentoring:
Mentor and guide junior lawyers and non-lawyer specialists; may lead small pods or project squads and conduct quality reviews.
Provide feedback and coaching; contribute to onboarding, training, and capability building programs.
Stakeholder & Cross Functional Management:
Build trusted relationships with regional and global stakeholders; translate legal positions into executive ready recommendations.
Convene working sessions to resolve path dependencies (commercial, procurement, technical, privacy/security), maintaining pace and decision clarity.
Required Experience
Bachelor of Law (LL.B) or equivalent legal qualification
Ideally up to 10 years post?qualification in in?house/shared services or law?firm environments with global contracting exposure.
Demonstrated track record handling complex matters independently and serving as SME in at least one relevant domain.
Prior experience mentoring or leading small teams (formal or informal).
Advanced contract drafting/negotiation across multiple categories; fluency with global standards and risk allocation.
Proficiency with legal technology (CLM, workflow, document automation, e?signature) and data?driven performance reporting.
Working knowledge of privacy & data protection, competition/consumer, IP licensing, technology/SaaS, and third?party risk fundamentals
Preferred Experience
Recognized SME in one or more domains (e.g., Commercial Contracting, Privacy/GDPR/DPDP, Corporate Governance).
People leadership exposure (e.g., squad lead, reviewers' lead, or mentoring program).
Experience in high?scale, matrixed environments and cross?jurisdictional delivery.
