We are currently supporting a new client in the financial services sector with their core system modernization. This initiative centers on the continued evolution and optimization of legacy mainframe applications that are critical to daily operations. Our client, a mid-sized North American financial institution, relies on IBM Z mainframe systems to run key customer-facing and internal services. With increasing demand for digital transformation and tighter regulatory compliance, the company is launching a multi-year modernization effort. As part of this journey, they are seeking Mainframe Developers who can work on refactoring legacy COBOL applications, optimizing DB2 access, and supporting gradual service decomposition into more modern architectures (e.g., APIs, microservices).

Responsibilities:

Maintain and enhance legacy applications developed in COBOL running on z/OS. Design and implement code changes to support new business requirements. Refactor monolithic components for performance, maintainability, and modularization. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, QA, architects) on system integration. Participate in batch job scheduling, troubleshooting, and debugging across environments. Support gradual integration with modern cloud-based services via APIs and MQ. Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge transfer sessions.

Requirements:

5+ years of hands-on experience with IBM mainframe technologies (z/OS). Proficiency in COBOL, JCL, and VSAM is required. Experience with CICS, DB2, and batch processing systems. Familiarity with modern development practices (version control, CI/CD pipelines, Agile/Scrum). Previous exposure to modernization initiatives (e.g., exposing mainframe functions via REST APIs) is a strong plus. Excellent communication and documentation skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed team.

Nice to have:

Knowledge of Rexx, Assembler, or PL/I. Experience with z/OS Connect, IBM MQ, or hybrid cloud integrations. Background in financial services or regulated industries.
