Roles and Responsibilities of a Machine Shop Manager (Mining Machinery Focus)

1. Machining Operations Management

Supervise the machining, repair, and fabrication of parts for mining equipment.

Manage CNC and manual machining operations tailored to heavy-duty components.

Oversee production of parts such as shafts, gears, housings, pins, bushings, etc., used in mining machines.

2. Preventive Maintenance and Repair Support

Coordinate with the maintenance department to prioritize urgent equipment repairs.

Lead the machining of replacement parts during planned and unplanned downtime.

Support rebuild programs for mining components (e.g., hydraulic cylinders, track frames).

3. Workforce and Safety Leadership

Supervise machinists, toolmakers, welders, and fabricators.

Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement in a high-risk environment.

4. Technical Support and Problem Solving

Work with engineers and maintenance supervisors to solve equipment failure problems.

Provide technical insights on machining feasibility, material selection, and design for manufacturability.

Ensure high-precision tolerances for parts used in harsh mining environments.

5. Quality and Compliance

Ensure all machining work complies with mining industry standards and internal quality procedures.

Implement NDT (non-destructive testing) processes when applicable.

Maintain inspection records and certifications, especially for pressure vessels and safety-critical parts.

6. Inventory and Tooling Control

Manage stock of raw materials (e.g., high-strength steels, hardfacing rods) and critical spare parts.

Ensure tools and fixtures are maintained and calibrated, especially for oversized mining components.

Skills and Experience Required

Extensive knowledge of heavy-duty machining for mining or industrial equipment.

Experience with large-capacity machines (e.g., vertical boring mills, line boring, lathes, CNC lathes, radial drills, shaping machines, planomillers, Etc...).

Understanding of wear materials, heat treatment, and welding techniques used in mining.

Strong leadership, planning, and communication skills.

Familiarity with MSHA regulations, ISO standards, and quality systems.

Technical training in mechanical engineering or trades is preferred.

A minimum of 5 years of experience is required.

Pay: ₹12,778.91 - ₹69,865.87 per month
