Job Purpose

The Workshop / Machine Shop Head is responsible for planning, managing, and controlling all machine shop operations involved in the manufacturing of rolling mill equipment. This role ensures production targets are met with optimum quality, safety, cost control, and on-time delivery.

Key Responsibilities

1. Production & Operations

Plan and execute machining operations for rolling mill equipment such as chocks, rollers, shafts, housings, mandrels, roller tables, etc.

Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly production targets are achieved as per dispatch schedules.

Optimize machine utilization, manpower allocation, and workflow in the shop.

Coordinate with Planning, Design, Quality, and Dispatch departments.

2. Machine Shop Management

Supervise operations of CNC & conventional machines (Lathe, VTL, HBM, Plano Miller, Grinding, Drilling, Boring, etc.).

Ensure proper setup, tooling, fixtures, and machining methods.

Control rejection, rework, and scrap through process improvements.

3. Quality Control

Ensure machining is carried out as per approved drawings, tolerances, and specifications.

Coordinate with QA/QC for in-process and final inspections.

Implement corrective actions for quality issues and customer complaints.

4. Maintenance & Safety

Coordinate preventive and breakdown maintenance with maintenance team.

Ensure machines are in safe operating condition at all times.

Enforce safety rules, PPE usage, and good housekeeping (5S).

5. Manpower & Leadership

Lead, guide, and motivate supervisors, operators, and technicians.

Conduct training for skill development and process improvement.

Manage attendance, shift planning, discipline, and performance evaluation.

6. Cost & Resource Control

Monitor machining costs, consumables, tools, and power usage.

Reduce cycle time, idle time, and overtime through effective planning.

Control outsourcing activities if required.

7. Documentation & Reporting

Maintain production records, machine utilization reports, and downtime analysis.

Prepare daily and monthly production status reports for management.

Required Qualifications

Education: Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering



Experience: 10-15 years in machine shop operations, with at least 4-5 years in a leadership role

Industry Experience: Rolling mill equipment, heavy engineering, or similar manufacturing industry

Skills & Competencies

Strong knowledge of machining processes and heavy equipment manufacturing

Excellent production planning and shop floor control

Leadership and team management skills

Drawing reading and tolerance understanding

Problem-solving and decision-making ability

Knowledge of safety, quality systems, and 5S

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

On-time production and dispatch

Machine utilization efficiency

Rejection and rework percentage

Safety compliance and zero accidents

Cost reduction and productivity improvement
