Key Responsibilities
A school mental health counsellor's duties include:
1. Emotional and Psychological Support
Provide one-on-one counselling to students experiencing anxiety, depression, family issues, or trauma.
Help students build self-esteem and emotional regulation skills.
Offer grief or crisis counselling when needed.
2. Behavioral and Academic Support
Identify behavioral or learning difficulties and develop strategies to manage them.
Collaborate with teachers to support students with special educational or emotional needs.
Conduct workshops on study skills, stress management, and time management.
3. Preventive and Awareness Programs
Organize mental health awareness sessions in schools.
Promote anti-bullying, inclusion, and emotional wellness programs.
Encourage peer support groups and healthy communication.
4. Collaboration and Advocacy
Work closely with teachers, parents, and school administrators to create a supportive environment.
Refer students to external mental health professionals (like psychiatrists or clinical psychologists) when deeper intervention is needed.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical counselling practices.
Educational & Professional Requirements
Common pathway:
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work, or related field.
Master's Degree in School Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or Mental Health Counselling.
Internship or practicum in a school or child counselling setting.
In India ? PG Diploma/M.A. in Counselling Psychology + registration with RCI or recognized body
