Job Description
- Perform eye examinations to check for vision problems and diseases
- Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, and eye diseases, such as glaucoma
- Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids, and if state law permits, medications
- Provide treatments such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation
- Offer pre- and postoperative care to cataract patients, as well as to patients undergoing LASIK surgery and other eye surgeries
- Promote eye health by counseling patients, including explaining how to clean and wear contact lenses
- Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologists or other healthcare practitioners if additional medical treatment is needed
