The Light Technician is a key member of the event production team, responsible for designing, installing, operating, and maintaining lighting systems to create the desired atmosphere and enhance the audience experience. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, creativity, and hands-on skills to support a wide variety of events, including corporate functions, live concerts, weddings, exhibitions, conferences, and stage productions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Pre-Event Preparation:
Collaborate with event managers, stage designers, and sound/video teams to understand lighting requirements.
Conduct site surveys to assess power availability, rigging points, and safety considerations.
Prepare lighting plans, equipment lists, and cabling diagrams as per event specifications.
Test and program lighting equipment before transportation to the event site.
2. Event Setup & Operation:
Install lighting equipment, rigging systems, trusses, power distribution units, and cabling.
Operate lighting consoles, dimmers, DMX controllers, and software systems during rehearsals and live events.
Adjust lighting intensity, focus, colors, and effects to match event themes or scripts.
Coordinate with other technical departments (sound, video, stage) to ensure seamless integration.
Ensure all installations are safe, stable, and compliant with electrical and fire safety standards.
3. Post-Event Duties:
Dismantle and safely pack all lighting equipment after events.
Inspect equipment for damage, perform basic repairs, and report major faults to supervisors.
Maintain accurate inventory records of all lighting gear.
Ensure proper storage, labelling, and maintenance schedules are followed.
4. Maintenance & Upgradation:
Carry out routine checks and preventive maintenance of lighting systems.
Keep abreast of the latest lighting technologies, trends, and equipment.
Suggest improvements, upgrades, and innovative lighting solutions for enhancing event experiences.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong knowledge of lighting equipment (moving heads, LEDs, spotlights, gobos, etc.).
Proficiency in lighting control consoles and DMX-based systems.
Ability to read and interpret lighting plots, diagrams, and technical specifications.
Good troubleshooting skills for electrical and software-related issues.
Creativity in designing lighting effects that match the mood, theme, and purpose of events.
Strong teamwork and communication skills; ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
Physical stamina to handle heavy equipment, climb ladders/trusses, and work long hours in event conditions.
Qualifications & Experience:
Diploma / Certification in Lighting Technology, Event Production, Theatre Studies, or related field (preferred).
Minimum
2-5 years of professional experience
in lighting operations for events, theatre, or live productions.
Knowledge of electrical safety standards and rigging practices (certifications in rigging/electrical safety are an added advantage).
Work Environment:
Event venues (indoor & outdoor), corporate offices, studios, and performance spaces.
Requires travel to different event sites, sometimes at short notice.
Flexible working hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on event schedules.
