Job Description

The Power Conversion, Rotating Machines Engineering Team is responsible for the design and engineering of world class generators and motors, delivering optimised solutions in line with the requirements from various customers.



Reporting to the Engineering Leader, Lead Mechanical Engineers support and work on projects and mechanical deliverables required by the engineering department. They are involved with machine lifecycle design from enquiry to remittance, commissioning and eventual disposal. We work across a variety of industries including; Oil & Gas, Marine, Renewables, Industrial (Metals and Mining) and Naval.



From customer specifications, Lead Mechanical Engineers must establish and drive technical strategy in order to design a machine that is fully compliant with regulations and our Engineering Design Standards. As part of their project teams, they ensure that the machine will perform properly and in accordance with customer specifications.



Activities contributing to the design and development of products, solutions and systems. Includes activities linked to technical improvement of existing products and components Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results.


The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).

Roles and Responsibilities



Essential Responsibilities

Working as part of a Project Team to support the design, build and delivery of the product whilst ensuring focus on key fundamentals: Safety, Quality, On Time Delivery (OTD) and Cost- always with unyielding integrity. Responsible for overseeing a team of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) professionals in the design, development, and documentation of rotating equipment, such as pumps, turbines, and motors Basic understanding on machine design whilst following Engineering Design Standards and Process Flows: detailed mechanical engineering analysis and design on all components required for large, custom rotating equipment. Ensure right first-time quality, maintaining a zero-defect mind set performance, and proactively manage Non-Conformance Report (NCR) resolution.

Design & Modeling:

Oversee the creation of 2D drawings, 3D models, assemblies, and specifications using CAD software (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD).

Technical Analysis:

Guide and participate in detailed engineering analyses, including stress analysis, rotor dynamics, thermal analysis, and tolerance stack-ups.

Standards & Compliance:

Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, international regulations (e.g., IEC, IEEE, API, ASME, ISO), and internal engineering design standards. Being able to make considered risk judgements on tight time scales whilst ensuring technical robustness of solutions. Conduct and support the Design Review strategy within the project team to ensure designs are meeting customer specifications. Attends the Contract Kick-Off Meeting (internal and with customer if requested) to recognize / acknowledge the technical subset of the contract. Review and approve drawings to ensure they will meet Form, Fit and Function requirements, and validate customer documents before they are sent to the Project Manager or Customer. Support Project managers and Engineering Planner during project execution phase to close out deliverables on time and deliver to our metrics. Lead the engineering element of the project team to deliver drawings, BOMs and specifications to Manufacturing and Sourcing in a timely manner to ensure we meet our OTD and ensure contract execution budget related commitments (eliminating margin erosion). Where required, supporting the Sales/Application Engineer team in order to build technical offers, compliant with cost objectives and our design standards. Attend Tender Review Meetings to recognize/validate technical offers. Support Sales and Service Functions including potential travel within INDIA and abroad when required to resolve issues. Ensure that the design is in line with customer specifications, international regulations and engineering design standards. Disposition Supplier Deviation Requests/Engineering Change Requests on projects that relate to the Mechanical Design. Work with and build strong bonds with the manufacturing teams both at design (ready for assembly) reviews and supporting during the machine build. Participate in the global standardization/rationalization strategy. Participate in knowledge sharing and best practice activities, both within our internal team and globally. Working cross functionally as part of a global GE team to ensure our customers (both external and internal) are satisfied with their experience of dealing with us. Create definitions of parts, modules, and assemblies in the form of 2D cross sections, 3D models, tolerance stack-ups, and various electronic data formats to support analysis, manufacturing, assembly, tooling, and inspection Includes direct people management responsibility including staffing and performance development. Utilizes in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to execute policy/strategy. Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market Uses some judgment and has some ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address more complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles. Uses technical experience and analytical thinking. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements. Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field. Conveys performance expectations and may handle sensitive issues.

Required Qualifications



Mechanical Engineering degree (or equivalent) or higher. 10 -15 years experience in technical engineering environment is desirable. Knowledge of rotating machines products, their engineering challenges and manufacturing processes. Experienced in engineering design processes and tools preferred (2D/3D CAD is desired). Computer literate in Word processing, Excel and Powerpoint applications. Flexible approach, willing to work extended hours if required and travel as and when required. Good written and oral skills. Experience in the reading and interpretation of engineering drawings and documentation.
