Role Overview
We are seeking a meticulous and skilled
Language Editor
to ensure that manuscripts in the fields of literature, history, philosophy, cultural studies, and related areas meet the highest standards of academic and linguistic quality. The editor will refine manuscripts for grammar, style, clarity, and consistency while preserving the author's academic voice and intent.
Key Responsibilities
Edit, proofread, and fact-check manuscripts, ensuring correct grammar, punctuation, syntax, and overall readability.
Ensure adherence to publisher's style guide (Chicago Manual of Style / MLA / APA / in-house guidelines).
Refine academic writing for clarity, coherence, and accessibility while maintaining scholarly rigor.
Collaborate with authors, translators, and subject-matter experts to resolve language or style issues.
Check citations, references, and bibliographies for accuracy and consistency.
Maintain deadlines while handling multiple projects simultaneously.
Ensure manuscripts are publication-ready before layout and production stages.
L1 - Junior Language Editor
Role Focus:
Copyediting & Proofreading
Edit manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and basic style issues.
Ensure consistency in language usage as per in-house style guide.
Support senior editors in checking references, citations, and bibliographies.
Proofread layouts before final publication.
Manage assigned chapters or sections of larger projects under supervision.
Skills/Experience:
Bachelor's/Master's in English, Humanities, or Linguistics.
0-2 years of editing/proofreading experience (internships accepted).
Strong eye for detail and willingness to learn editorial standards.
L2 - Language Editor (Mid-Level)
Role Focus:
Advanced Editing & Author Collaboration
Perform substantive editing for clarity, coherence, and readability while retaining academic rigor.
Work directly with authors and translators to resolve language issues.
Ensure adherence to international editorial standards (Chicago, MLA, APA, etc.).
Cross-check facts, references, and bibliographies for accuracy.
Handle end-to-end editing for medium-scale projects independently.
Mentor junior editors on style consistency and editorial practices.
Skills/Experience:
Master's degree in English, Literature, Linguistics, or Humanities.
3-5 years of professional editing experience in academic publishing.
Proficiency in at least one major style guide.
Strong communication and project management skills.
L3 - Senior/Lead Language Editor
Role Focus:
Quality Leadership & Editorial Strategy
Oversee language quality across multiple humanities projects.
Define and enforce editorial standards, guidelines, and workflows.
Handle complex manuscripts (e.g., multi-author, translated, or interdisciplinary works).
Provide developmental editing and guide authors on improving scholarly expression.
Coordinate with production, design, and publishing teams for smooth delivery.
Train, mentor, and review work of L1/L2 editors.
Contribute to process improvements, new tools adoption, and author workshops.
Skills/Experience:
Master's/PhD in English, Humanities, or related field.
6+ years of editorial experience, with at least 2 years in a senior/lead role.
Expertise in multiple style guides and strong subject knowledge in humanities.
Proven leadership and team management skills.
Ability to balance quality, timelines, and author relationships.
