The Experienced Staff Nurse/Midwife in the Labour Ward is responsible for providing high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-based care to women during labour, delivery, and the immediate postnatal period. The role involves continuous assessment, timely interventions, emergency management, documentation, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe maternal and neonatal outcomes.
2. Key Responsibilities Clinical Care
Provide continuous monitoring, assessment, and support to women in labour.
Conduct normal deliveries independently while ensuring adherence to clinical protocols.
Assist obstetricians with instrumental and high-risk deliveries.
Perform and interpret CTG (Cardiotocography) and escalate abnormalities promptly.
Identify obstetric emergencies (e.g., PPH, pre-eclampsia, shoulder dystocia) and initiate immediate interventions.
Provide neonatal resuscitation and immediate newborn care as required.
Administer medications, IV fluids, and pain relief as per guidelines.
Ensure infection control and patient safety practices at all times.
Patient Support & Communication
Offer emotional support, pain-coping techniques, and health education to labouring women and families.
Maintain clear and empathetic communication throughout all stages of care.
Provide breastfeeding support in the immediate postnatal period.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain complete, accurate, and timely patient records.
Document all clinical findings, interventions, and outcomes.
Report clinical concerns to senior staff and participate in handover processes.
Teamwork & Collaboration
Work closely with obstetricians, anesthetists, pediatricians, and other healthcare staff.
Participate in multidisciplinary rounds.
Support training and mentoring of junior staff and student nurses/midwives.
Quality & Safety
Follow clinical guidelines, hospital policies, and national maternity standards.
Participate in audits, drills (e.g., PPH, neonatal resuscitation), and quality improvement initiatives.
Ensure proper use, cleaning, and reporting of labour ward equipment.
3. Qualifications & Experience
Registered Nurse / Registered Midwife
with valid professional license.
Minimum 2-3 years of experience
in Labour Ward / Maternity / Obstetrics.
Certification in
BLS
,
NRP
, and preferably
ACLS
or
Midwifery Emergency Skills
.
Strong clinical assessment and emergency management skills.
Ability to work in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment.
