Job Description

A gold assayer is a professional working in an Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC) who performs chemical analysis to determine the purity (fineness) of gold and other precious metals, certifying that it meets declared standards before a hallmark is applied as proof of quality and authenticity. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licenses and monitors these centre's in India, where gold jewellery is tested using methods like X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and fire assay to prevent fraud and ensure consumer confidence.
The Assayer's Role

Purity Determination:

The primary role of the gold assayer is to perform quantitative chemical analysis to determine the exact gold content in an item.

Quality Assurance:

By verifying the fineness and checking for prohibited elements like cadmium, the assayer acts as a 3rd-party guarantee of quality for the consumer.
The Assaying Process

1. Fire Assay:

The sample is then subjected to a fire assay, a highly accurate international standard method, where it's melted with silver in a cupel to separate impurities, leaving a pure gold bead.

2. Fineness Calculation:

The pure gold cornet is weighed to calculate its fineness.
