As an Eye Bank Lab Technician, the primary focus will be the high-precision preparation of corneal tissue for advanced endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK and DMEK), the processing of amniotic membranes, and the facilitation of surgical training through wet lab management. This is a technical, detail-oriented role requiring a blend of surgical-level dexterity and rigorous adherence to sterile protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Advanced Corneal Tissue Processing
Pre-cutting: Perform precision microkeratome or femtosecond laser passes to prepare DSAEK (Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) grafts.
DMEK Preparation: Expertly peel Descemet's membrane to create DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) scrolls under microscopic guidance.
Evaluation: Conduct pre- and post-cut specular microscopy and slit-lamp examinations to ensure endothelial cell density and tissue quality meet surgical standards.
2. Amniotic Membrane Preparation
Processing: Harvest, clean, and process donor amniotic membranes for therapeutic use.
Preservation: Manage the dehydration or cryopreservation of membranes according to established SOPs.
Quality Control: Ensure all grafts are sterile and properly sized for clinical applications.
3. Wet Lab & Recovery Support
Instructional Support: Set up and oversee the Wet Lab environment for eye bank training and cornea recovery simulations.
Tissue Recovery: Assist in or lead the surgical recovery of donor eye tissue, ensuring maximum viability and aseptic technique.
4. Lab Maintenance & Compliance
Sterility: Maintain a Clean Room environment through rigorous disinfection and environmental monitoring.
Inventory: Manage stocks of surgical supplies, media, and specialized reagents.
Documentation: Maintain meticulous records for local regulatory compliance, ensuring full "vein-to-eye" traceability.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education | Bachelor's degree in Optometry , Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
Experience | 1-3 years in an Eye Bank or clinical laboratory
Dexterity | Exceptional hand-eye coordination for delicate tissue manipulation.
Why This Role Matters
This role directly impacts patient outcomes. By "pre-cutting" tissue in the lab, you reduce surgical time for the ophthalmologist and provide standardized, high-quality grafts that help restore sight to patients with corneal blindness.
