Sample Collection and Preparation

Lab Technician Roles and Responsibilities

Collect blood, urine, tissue, or other specimens from patients (in clinical labs). Prepare samples for testing by labeling, sorting, and storing them appropriately.

Conducting Laboratory Tests

Perform standard laboratory tests (e.g., blood counts, chemical analyses, microbiological cultures). Operate analytical instruments such as microscopes, centrifuges, and spectrometers.

Data Recording and Analysis

Accurately record test results. Analyze findings and report abnormal results to relevant personnel (e.g., doctors or supervisors).

Equipment Maintenance

Calibrate, clean, and maintain lab equipment. Troubleshoot and report malfunctions or calibration issues.

Quality Control and Assurance

Follow protocols to ensure testing accuracy. Maintain documentation for quality audits and regulatory compliance.

Health and Safety Compliance

Adhere to safety procedures and biohazard protocols. Wear protective gear and properly dispose of hazardous waste.

Inventory and Supply Management

Monitor stock levels of lab supplies and reagents. Order or request restocking when supplies run low.

Collaboration and Communication

Work alongside scientists, pathologists, or medical staff. Communicate findings clearly and timely.

Additional Duties (Depending on Setting)

Clinical Labs

Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA). Assist in diagnosing diseases based on test results.

Research Labs

Assist in experiments and data collection. Help in writing research reports or publications.

Industrial/Manufacturing Labs

Test raw materials and finished products for quality. Ensure processes meet regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ISO).
