Job Summary/Objective: The DMLT Phlebotomist Staff member is the frontline representative responsible for providing an exceptional, comfortable patient experience while ensuring the highest standards of specimen collection and integrity. This role primarily involves phlebotomy (blood collection) and the meticulous processing and timely dispatch of samples to the central processing laboratory, strictly adhering to all brand and safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Phlebotomy and Patient Care (Core Duty) Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, and heel stick procedures efficiently and safely on patients of all ages, including infants, children, adults, and geriatric patients.
Prioritise patient comfort and safety, managing potential anxiety and ensuring a calm, professional collection environment.
Strictly adhere to Universal Precautions and aseptic techniques to prevent contamination and infection.
Provide clear pre- and post-collection instructions (e.g., fasting requirements) to patients and answer common procedural questions professionally.
Specimen Integrity and Logistics Accurately verify and record patient demographic and test information, ensuring no sample collection proceeds without proper documentation (A vital step for regulatory compliance).
Meticulously label all collected tubes immediately at the bedside/chairside, utilizing the correct bar codes and collection tube types for each requested test.
Process specimens (e.g., centrifugation, aliquoting) as required by the central lab's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) before dispatch.
Prepare and pack samples correctly using appropriate cold chain and transport containers, ensuring timely and secure dispatch to the main laboratory.
Quality Assurance and Compliance Monitor and document the temperature and condition of collection and storage areas daily.
Conduct daily inventory checks of phlebotomy supplies, consumables, and specimen collection kits, reporting stock requirements to the Franchise Manager.
Adhere strictly to the Franchisor's brand standards and SOPs for service delivery, hygiene, and uniform presentation.
Document any incidents, near misses, or collection errors and participate in corrective action planning.
Administrative and Centre Support Register patient requests, manage billing, and receive payments using the provided Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the blood collection room, waiting area, and specimen processing counter.
Handle incoming calls, coordinate home collection appointments, and assist with general center administration as directed by the Franchise Manager.
Qualifications and Requirements Education and Certification Essential: Completion of a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) or equivalent (e.g., Certified Phlebotomy Technician).
Minimum 1 years of dedicated professional experience performing phlebotomy in a clinical or diagnostic setting.
A strong foundation in basic anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
Key Skills and Attributes Exceptional Venipuncture Skills: Demonstrated high success rate with minimal patient discomfort (experience with challenging veins is a plus).
Outstanding Customer Service: Ability to communicate clearly, show empathy, and handle difficult situations with composure and professionalism.
Meticulous Attention to Detail: Absolute accuracy in patient identification and labeling protocols is non-negotiable.
Technical Proficiency: Competent in using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and basic Microsoft Office tools for reporting.
