Textile Testing Lab Technician - All Fabrics (Overview)
A Textile Testing Lab Technician is responsible for testing and analyzing different types of fabrics to evaluate their quality, performance, durability, and compliance with industry standards. This role involves working with both natural and synthetic textiles, using specialized testing instruments, and preparing detailed reports.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sample Preparation
Receiving and conditioning fabric samples
Cutting specimens according to test standards (ISO, ASTM, AATCC)
Labeling and maintaining sample records
2. Physical Testing
GSM Test
Tensile strength
Tearing strength
Bursting strength
Pilling resistance
Abrasion resistance
Seam strength / seam slippage
Stretch & recovery
Dimensional stability (shrinkage test)
Air permeability
3. Colorfastness Testing
Colorfastness to washing, rubbing, perspiration, light, water, bleach
Grey scale grading for color change & staining
4. Chemical Testing (as needed)
pH value
Formaldehyde content
Fiber composition (burn test or chemical analysis)
Color strength (K/S value)
5. Reporting & Compliance
Recording test results accurately
Preparing test certificates
Ensuring compliance with buyer and industry standards
Maintaining calibration records for instruments
Following safety protocols in the lab
Skills Required
Knowledge of AATCC, ASTM, ISO test methods
Ability to use lab equipment (GSM cutter, crock meter, tensile tester, washing fastness tester, etc.)
Basic computer skills (Excel, report making)
Attention to detail
Understanding of textile fibers & fabric structures
