The Laboratory In-Charge is responsible for overseeing all laboratory operations, ensuring accuracy of test results, maintaining quality and safety standards, managing lab staff, and coordinating effectively with clinicians. This role is crucial for maintaining diagnostic reliability and smooth functioning of lab services.
Education
B.Sc / M.Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or equivalent.
Additional certifications in quality management (preferred).
Experience
Minimum 3-5 years experience in a diagnostic laboratory or hospital setting.
At least 1-2 years in a supervisory / in-charge role preferred.
Supervise daily lab activities including sample collection, processing, testing, and reporting.
Ensure proper workflow and timely delivery of test results (TAT).
Coordinate with OPD/IPD units for urgent and routine investigations.
2. Quality Control & Compliance
Implement and monitor internal and external quality control (IQC & EQAS).
Ensure compliance with NABL/NABH guidelines and hospital policies.
Maintain policies, SOPs, and documentation required for audits.
Ensure proper calibration and validation of lab equipment.
3. Staff Supervision & Training
Manage lab technicians, phlebotomists, and support staff.
Conduct training sessions for sample handling, safety protocols, and equipment usage.
Monitor staff performance and ensure adherence to quality and safety standards.
4. Equipment & Inventory Management
Ensure all analyzers and equipment are functioning properly.
Coordinate for preventive maintenance and breakdown service with vendors.
Maintain inventory of reagents, consumables, and ensure timely ordering.
5. Safety & Hygiene
Ensure biosafety protocols, waste disposal procedures, and infection control practices.
Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant laboratory environment.
Ensure PPE usage and adherence to safety guidelines by all lab staff.
6. Reporting & Documentation
Oversee preparation of accurate and timely lab reports.
Maintain records related to QC, equipment logs, stock registers, and audits.
Prepare MIS reports for management regarding lab performance, expenses, and issues.
7. Communication & Coordination
Communicate effectively with doctors for critical value reporting and clarifications.
Coordinate with nursing staff, front office, and other departments.
Address patient concerns related to lab tests and ensure high-quality service.
