The Lab Assistant plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of laboratory facilities. The successful candidate will support laboratory activities through the proper handling, maintenance, and preparation of equipment and supplies, ensuring adherence to safety and quality protocols. This position is key in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of lab functions at Himalaya Medical College and Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Maintenance & Cleaning
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory, ensuring work areas, equipment, and instruments are properly sanitized and stored.
Regularly clean and disinfect work surfaces in compliance with the hospital's hygiene standards and infection control protocols.
Equipment & Supplies Management
Assist with setting up and preparing laboratory instruments and equipment for routine diagnostic and research activities.
Monitor stock levels of reagents, disposables, and other lab supplies; report shortages and arrange for timely replenishment.
Perform basic troubleshooting and routine maintenance on laboratory equipment, notifying supervisors when specialized repairs are needed.
Assistance with Specimen Processing
Aid in the receiving, handling, and processing of specimens (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Ensure accurate labeling, segregation, and safe storage of specimens to prevent contamination or mishandling.
Support to Laboratory Staff
Provide administrative and logistical support to lab technicians and scientists, such as preparing and organizing workstations.
Assist in the proper disposal of biohazardous and non-hazardous waste in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory guidelines.
Safety & Compliance
Follow established laboratory safety protocols and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Report any safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or incidents promptly to the laboratory supervisor.
Maintain accurate records of cleaning schedules, inventory counts, and equipment maintenance logs.
General Support
Participate in inventory audits and other tasks as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
Perform routine duties as required during the shift to ensure a high standard of lab operation and support.
Required Qualifications
10+2 with Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT)
Minimum duration:
2 years
Recognized by a government-approved board/council or affiliated institution.
OR
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT)
from a recognized university/institution.
Desirable (as per institutional requirements):
Relevant experience in a clinical laboratory setting (usually
1-2 years
).
Knowledge of lab safety protocols, biomedical waste management, and quality control procedures.
Experience:
Prior experience in a laboratory setting is preferred
Experience in a clinical or academic lab environment is an asset.
Knowledge & Skills:
Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain a high level of accuracy.
Good organizational and time management skills.
Basic computer skills to log information and manage inventory records.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
Physical Requirements:
Capability to stand for prolonged periods.
Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects (e.g., supplies, equipment) as required.
