Job Description

Responsibilities:

A network engineer designs, implements, maintains, and troubleshoots an organization's computer networks, ensuring reliable and secure connectivity for data, voice, and video services. Key responsibilities include installing and configuring hardware like routers and switches, managing firewalls and security policies, monitoring network performance, and collaborating with other teams to resolve issues and plan for upgrades. Design and implementation:

Plan and build network infrastructure, including Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

Maintenance and administration:

Maintain and administer network hardware, software, and configurations, including upgrading firmware and applying security patches.

Performance optimization:

Monitor network performance using tools to identify and resolve bottlenecks, analyze traffic, and optimize for efficiency and user experience.

Troubleshooting:

Diagnose and resolve network and system issues, including outages and connectivity problems, often collaborating with other teams.

Security management:

Implement and enforce network security policies, manage firewalls and access controls, and ensure data protection.

Documentation:

Create and maintain detailed network diagrams, documents, and protocols.

Collaboration:

Work with other IT teams, vendors, and senior managers on network-related projects and status reporting.

Upgrades and future planning:

Advise on purchasing new equipment, plan for future network development, and support migrations to cloud networking environments.
Common skills and knowledge

Strong knowledge of networking protocols like TCP/IP, BGP, and OSPF. Experience with network hardware (routers, switches) and software (firewalls, VPNs). Understanding of network security principles and tools. Experience with network monitoring and diagnostic tools. Familiarity with cloud networking (e.g., AWS, Azure) is increasingly important. Relevant certifications, such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), can be beneficial.
