Receive and verify patient samples (blood, urine, swabs, etc.) from various departments.
Ensure all specimens are correctly labeled with patient details, and ensure samples are appropriately packaged for analysis.
Confirm the proper collection method has been followed for each type of sample.
Accurately enter patient demographic information, test orders, and specimen details into the laboratory information system (LIS).
Generate requisition forms, labels, and barcodes for proper specimen identification.
Track specimens through the lab workflow, ensuring samples are routed to the correct testing area.
Maintain accurate records and logs of specimen receipt and processing status.
Ensure samples are stored at proper temperatures or conditions until ready for testing.
Work closely with phlebotomists to ensure the correct specimens are collected and properly identified before being sent for processing.
Assist with troubleshooting any issues with specimen collection or discrepancies.
Perform accurate data entry into LIS and ensure all test orders are matched with the correct patient.
Verify that all necessary documentation accompanies samples, including requisition forms and any patient-specific instructions.
Ensure adherence to all laboratory safety, confidentiality, and regulatory guidelines, including HIPAA and CLIA.
Perform quality control checks to verify accuracy in sample processing.
Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, phlebotomists, and clinicians to resolve any discrepancies or issues related to specimen collection and testing.
Address concerns from patients or staff regarding specimen handling or processing.
