The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for supporting physicians and nursing staff during gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic procedures. This role involves preparing procedure rooms, handling endoscopic equipment, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining high standards of infection control. The technician plays a key role in delivering quality patient care and ensuring efficient workflow in the GI/Endoscopy unit.
Key Responsibilities Procedure Support
Assist physicians and nurses during endoscopic procedures such as EGD, colonoscopy, ERCP, EUS, sigmoidoscopy, and specialized GI cases.
Prepare, position, and transport patients according to procedure requirements.
Anticipate provider needs during procedures and provide appropriate instruments and supplies.
Equipment Management
Set up, test, and operate endoscopy equipment, video processors, insufflators, light sources, and related devices.
Perform high-level disinfection, cleaning, and sterilization of endoscopes and accessories per departmental and manufacturer guidelines.
Troubleshoot basic equipment malfunctions and report issues promptly.
Maintain inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment.
Patient Care & Safety
Adhere to infection prevention and control standards during all procedures.
Provide patient support and reassurance before and after procedures.
Monitor patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure.
Follow safety protocols for handling biohazard materials.
Documentation & Compliance
Accurately document equipment usage, procedure details, and scope tracking logs.
Maintain compliance with facility policies, Joint Commission Standards, OSHA, and CDC guidelines.
Participate in ongoing training, quality improvement, and competency assessments.
Qualifications Education & Experience
High School Diploma or GED required.
Preferred: Certification as a Gastroenterology/Endoscopy Technician (e.g., SGNA-CGIT).
Preferred: Previous experience in a hospital, endoscopy suite, or surgical environment.
Skills & Competencies
Knowledge of endoscopic procedures, sterile technique, and infection control principles.
Ability to operate and maintain complex medical equipment.
Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly to provider needs.
Physically capable of standing for extended periods and assisting with patient positioning.
Work Environment
Outpatient or inpatient GI lab / endoscopy suite
Exposure to biological hazards, chemicals, and bodily fluids
Shift work may include weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 25-50 lbs.
Frequent standing, bending, and walking.
Manual dexterity for handling scopes and medical instruments.
