Job Description

1. Job Title

HGV Class 1 Driver / Articulated Lorry Driver / Tractor-Trailer Driver

2. Job Purpose

To safely transport goods and materials over long distances using heavy articulated vehicles. To ensure timely delivery while complying with all road safety and company regulations.

3. Key Responsibilities

Driving & Delivery

Operate HGV Class 1 vehicles (rigid + trailer) in accordance with traffic laws. Ensure punctual pickup and delivery of goods. Plan routes effectively to optimize fuel efficiency and time.

Vehicle Checks & Maintenance

Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle and trailer. Monitor engine, brakes, tyres, lights, and other safety systems. Report and document any mechanical issues promptly.

Safety & Compliance

Adhere to all road safety regulations and company policies. Maintain records of driving hours, fuel usage, and maintenance logs. Ensure cargo is safely loaded, secured, and unloaded.

Communication

Coordinate with dispatchers, warehouse staff, and clients regarding delivery schedules. Report delays, accidents, or other incidents promptly.

Documentation

Maintain logbooks, delivery receipts, and statutory paperwork. Ensure compliance with legal and company record-keeping standards.

4. Qualifications & Certifications

Valid HGV Class 1 / C+E License

(or equivalent in your country). Minimum

age: 21+ years

(varies by region).

Medical fitness certificate

/ professional driver's health check. Training / certification in

vehicle safety and handling

is advantageous.

5. Experience

Prior experience driving

articulated trucks

or long-haul HGV vehicles. Familiarity with

loading/unloading procedures

and cargo securing. Knowledge of

long-distance navigation

, maps, and GPS systems.

6. Skills & Competencies

Excellent

7. Working Conditions

Long-distance travel, sometimes overnight or across states/countries. Exposure to variable weather and road conditions. Physically demanding: loading/unloading cargo, extended sitting periods. Shift work may be required for 24/7 logistics operations.

8. Salary & Benefits (Typical)

Salary varies by region, experience, and employer. India: ₹25,000 - ?50,000 per month (long-haul). UK/Europe: 30,000 - 45,000 per year. Benefits may include: overtime pay, allowances, accommodation for long trips, health insurance, pension contributions.
