The Trainee Engineer - Mechanical will support the planning, execution, and monitoring of mechanical works related to ship refit, repair, and maintenance projects. The role is designed to provide hands-on exposure to shipboard systems, dry dock activities, and yard operations under the guidance of senior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Project Support
Assist in inspection, dismantling, repair, overhaul, and installation of shipboard mechanical systems such as:
Main & auxiliary engines
Pumps, compressors, valves, heat exchangers
Piping systems and hydraulic equipment
Support dry dock activities including shaft alignment, rudder works, sea valves, and hull-related mechanical fittings.
Read and understand basic mechanical drawings, P&IDs, manuals, and specifications.
Assist in preparing work plans, job cards, and daily progress reports.
Execution & Monitoring
Coordinate with fitters, welders, subcontractors, and vendors during execution of works.
Monitor job progress against timelines and report deviations to the reporting engineer.
Ensure proper usage of tools, tackles, and measuring instruments.
Support commissioning and testing of repaired or installed equipment.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Follow shipyard safety rules, permit-to-work systems, and PPE requirements at all times.
Assist in maintaining quality standards as per class, flag, and client requirements.
Support inspections by Class Surveyors and client representatives.
Report unsafe conditions, near misses, or deviations immediately.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain records of work carried out, materials consumed, and spares used.
Assist in preparation of completion reports, test records, and handover documents.
Support closing of job files post completion of refit activities.
Training & Development
Undergo on-the-job training in ship refit and repair processes.
Learn shipyard best practices, marine standards, and basic project management.
Participate in internal safety and technical training programs.
Qualification & Experience
Education:
Diploma / B.Tech / B.E. in Mechanical Engineering
Experience:
Freshers or candidates with up to 1 year of experience in shipyards, fabrication, marine, or heavy engineering industries may apply
Skills & Competencies
Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles
Willingness to work onboard vessels, dry docks, and confined spaces
Ability to work in shifts and extended hours when required
Good learning attitude and adaptability to site conditions
Basic computer skills (MS Excel, Word)
Strong safety awareness and teamwork skills
Working Conditions
Exposure to shipyard, dockyard, and onboard environments
May involve working at heights, confined spaces, and marine conditions
PPE compliance mandatory at all times
