About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Freelance Primary Data Collection Specialist to support our research projects through accurate, real-time collection of primary data from field locations or remote settings. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and executing data collection activities such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observations, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and ethical compliance.
This role requires excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and experience working with digital tools for field data capture.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct on-site or remote data collection through surveys, interviews, and field observations.
Develop and/or follow structured data collection instruments such as questionnaires, checklists, or digital forms.
Collect data using tools like Google Forms, KoboToolbox, SurveyCTO, ODK, or Excel-based templates.
Ensure real-time recording and uploading of data from the field, maintaining data accuracy and timeliness.
Coordinate with stakeholders (respondents, supervisors, research teams) to schedule interviews or access field sites.
Maintain participant confidentiality and obtain informed consent before data collection.
Flag data inconsistencies, missing values, and report any field-related issues proactively.
Participate in pilot testing of data collection tools and provide feedback for improvement.
Submit daily/weekly reports and clean datasets to project managers or research leads.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in social sciences, Statistics, Public Health, Market Research, Education, or related fields.
Previous experience in primary data collection, field surveys, or social research projects (academic or market-based).
Experience working in urban, rural, or institutional field settings.
Technical Skills & Competencies
Proficiency in data collection platforms: Google Forms, ODK, KoboToolbox, SurveyCTO, etc.
Knowledge of sampling methods, field protocols, and survey/interview techniques.
Strong verbal communication skills in English and regional/local languages.
Ability to troubleshoot mobile devices or digital tools during fieldwork.
Basic knowledge of data handling using Excel or Google Sheets.
Familiarity with ethical guidelines and field research compliance.
