Job Description

Job Summary:

The Fitter will be responsible for assembling, fitting, and fabricating structural components of ships, including hulls, bulkheads, decks, and other metal structures. The role involves reading and interpreting engineering drawings, ensuring precise alignment and welding preparation, and adhering to safety and quality standards in a shipyard environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and work instructions. Mark, cut, shape, and align steel plates, pipes, and structural components according to specifications. Fit and tack-weld parts in preparation for final welding. Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments to achieve accurate fitting and alignment. Work in coordination with welders, fabricators, and supervisors to ensure timely completion of assigned work. Conduct dimensional checks and ensure accuracy in fitting before welding. Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE at all times. Assist in inspection and repair of ship structures when required. Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure the work area is clean and safe.

Skills and Competencies:

Strong knowledge of ship structure and fabrication processes. Ability to read and interpret fabrication and assembly drawings. Skilled in using measuring instruments such as tape, square, and vernier caliper. Familiar with oxy-acetylene cutting, grinding, and tack welding. Understanding of safety standards in shipbuilding and heavy fabrication industries. Team player with good communication and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications:

ITI / Diploma in Fitter / Mechanical or equivalent. Minimum 2-5 years of experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or heavy fabrication industry. Experience working in dry dock or shipyard preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights. Capable of lifting, bending, and standing for long hours as required in shipyard operations.
