Job Description

A fire technician installs, inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs fire protection systems like alarms, sprinklers, and extinguishers. They conduct safety inspections to identify hazards, ensure compliance with codes, and perform maintenance to keep systems operational. Key duties include troubleshooting, repairing faulty equipment, and documenting all service activities

Core responsibilities

Installation:

Install and set up fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, extinguishers, and other fire safety equipment.

Inspection:

Conduct routine and specialized inspections of fire safety equipment and building systems to ensure they are functioning correctly and meet safety codes.

Maintenance and repair:

Perform preventive maintenance, such as cleaning and replacing parts, and conduct repairs or replacements on faulty components.

Testing:

Test newly installed or existing systems, including alarms, smoke detectors, and suppression systems, to confirm they are operational.

Compliance:

Ensure all work and systems comply with local and national fire codes and regulations.

Record keeping:

Maintain accurate records of all inspections, tests, maintenance, repairs, and installations.

Troubleshooting:

Diagnose problems and perform necessary repairs or replacements on fire alarm and firefighting systems.

Emergency response:

Respond to emergency calls related to fire safety systems to address issues as they arise.
Key skills and qualifications

Technical knowledge:

A strong understanding of fire science, how different systems work, and the relevant codes (like NFPA 72).

Troubleshooting and repair:

Ability to diagnose and fix issues with a variety of fire safety equipment.

Attention to detail:

Meticulous attention to detail for inspections, repairs, and record-keeping.

Physical ability:

Some roles may require physical strength and manual dexterity for installation and maintenance tasks.

Customer service and communication:

Ability to clearly explain system functions to clients and communicate effectively with team members and other professionals.
