FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN DEPARTMENT OF CANCER



REHABILITATION AND PHYSIOTHERAPY




The Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations in Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is


governed by a charitable trust - Tata Medical Centre Trust. It is an integrated Oncology facility


with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern facilities and the most


contemporary medical equipment. The Hospital, with a capacity of 437 beds, serves all sections


of the society, with 75% of the infrastructure earmarked for subsidized treatment for the


underprivileged sections. It provides a wide spectrum of services from diagnosis and therapy to


rehabilitation and palliative support. The Institution's objective is to excel in service, education


and research.




The Department of Cancer Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy aims to offer evidence based


protocolized cancer rehabilitation. The hospital has an excellent electronic medical records


(EMR) system making data analysis/retrieval easy. There is a dedicated Surgical, Medical and


Paediatric ICU, HDU and Surgical ward, General and private wards and Bone marrow transplant


unit.





Training overview:




Cancer Rehabilitation is less known subject as it is not included in details in Physiotherapist


course curriculum, and because of lack of exposure. TMC rehabilitation unit handles almost


every possible cancer patient requires rehabilitation.


Physiotherapist will get opportunities to learn Cancer Rehabilitation at its best from Tata


Medical Center. In addition they will also learn patient handling, communication,


professionalism, time management which will help them in future.


Fellowship will include extensive Academic and clinical exposure to the cancer rehabilitation in


ICU, wards and outpatient units.

Eligibility Criteria:

Minimum eligibility - Bachelors in Physiotherapy. MPT/PhD are also


welcome from recognised Institutions

Minimum One year, and can be extendable up to 2 yearsunder


consideration

Clinical responsibilities:



Fellows to be always in touch with senior colleagues during patient assessment , decision



making , management ,home care guidelines and other in hospital non clinical issues.







1. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the


management of patients in your care.


2. To undertake an assessment of patients, using clinical reasoning skills and manual


assessment techniques to provide a physiotherapy diagnosis of their condition and provide


evidence based targeted management.


3. With appropriate support, to formulate prognosis and recommend best course of


intervention, developing discharge plans.


4. To evaluate a patients' progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required,


developing reflective practice.


5. To be responsible for planning and prioritising your own patient case load


6. To take delegated responsibility from senior colleagues for managing and treating patients


with particular conditions within each rotation.


7. To participate actively in clinical present case presentations, classes, case discussions or


other academic meetings.


8. To determine the patients' understanding of treatment proposals to ensure valid patient


consent. To understand and work within a legal framework with patients who lack the


capacity to consent to treatment.


9. Encourage patients and their caregivers in an active approach to regaining and maintaining


independence. This requires empathy, sensitivity and good interpersonal skills.


10. Be highly skilled in communicating with patients of all ages who have a range of physical


and psychological barriers to understanding.


11. To manage clinical risk within own patient case load.


12. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in


Hospital information System.


13. To attain competencies for the safe use of all equipment and techniques before use.
