Key responsibilities

Policy and compliance:

Develop, implement, and maintain fire and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local and international regulations and standards.

Risk assessment and hazard control:

Conduct regular safety inspections, identify hazards, and recommend and implement solutions to minimize or eliminate risks. This includes assessing mechanical/civil and contractor activities.

Emergency preparedness:

Develop and coordinate emergency response and evacuation plans. Conduct regular mock drills and train staff on fire prevention and emergency procedures.

Equipment and infrastructure:

Ensure all fire safety equipment (e.g., alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers) is properly maintained, tested, and in good working condition. Monitor the upkeep of fire pump rooms, and other critical areas.

Training and awareness:

Provide fire safety training and awareness sessions to all employees and ensure new hires complete safety inductions.

Incident investigation:

Investigate accidents, near misses, and other safety incidents to determine causes and recommend corrective actions.

Record keeping:

Maintain accurate and detailed records of all safety-related activities, including training, inspections, and incidents.

Work permits:

Monitor and ensure that work permits are issued and followed for all construction and other activities on-site to ensure they are carried out safely.
Qualifications and experience

Education:

Typically requires a degree in Fire and Safety Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

2+ years of experience in fire safety, with exposure to construction safety being a plus. Experience with safety management systems like OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 is also advantageous.

Knowledge:

Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as the National Building Code (NBC) and NFPA is often required.
