Your key responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Novartis aim to drive environmental compliance & sustainability through our own operations, as well as those of our suppliers, and have set ambitious targets to minimize our impacts on climate, waste and water. The role will drive and lead environmental compliance activities by seamlessly collaborating, internally and externally, for operations to deliver sustainable long-term growth, using innovative & green solutions, while making a positive impact on patients and society as a whole.
  • Implement and maintain processes and procedures to drive environmental compliance across all internal manufacturing sites, offices and labs with relevant regulations & internal standards. Lead environmental compliance (EC) for across all internal manufacturing sites, offices and labs
  • Lead environmental due diligence for divestments, mergers & acquisitions activities and advise legal/executive teams. Responsible for assessing environmental liabilities of divestments/structuring environment agreements for transactions. Support legal teams in dispute management with third parties, including negotiation of environment agreements.
  • Lead environmental investigations to develop and manage cost effective remedial soil & groundwater decontamination. Drive implementation of contaminated site remediation strategic plans & initiatives including environmental site assessments (ESA) phase I/II, strengthen operational processes/procedures towards better transparency.
  • Support all internal Sites, offices & labs with clean-up of spills, selecting and managing consulting companies and contractors performing the remediation work, and providing technical support for litigation and defense. Provides consultation & support on technical environmental risks, incident investigations, CAPA implementation, training, competency building, reporting & communication plans.
  • Informs site/platform/business leads, operations leadership team, as appropriate, of emerging issues, risks, opportunities & KPIs. Review upcoming environmental compliance regulations such as extended producer responsibility (EPR), plastics packaging, anti-microbial resistance (AMR). wastewater & air emission regulations etc., and ensure preparedness at the organizational level to minimize operational and business risks.
  • Implement and maintain processes and procedures towards effective tracking & adherence of new/emerging laws & regulations including plastics, EPR, AMR, water quality etc., Monthly KPI reporting, best practice sharing, training & competency programs. Ensure that systems are in place to demonstrate/verify compliance to environmental regulations, remediation & liabilities requirements. Proactively manage processes to mitigate any compliance risks, identify gaps & engage with the sites for timely corrective actions.
Minimum requirements

What you'll bring to the role:
  • Experience in key areas such as environmental compliance / sustainability program execution, performance reviews, environmental site assessments (ESA), contaminated site remediation, ISO 14001 etc.,
  • Capability in managing environmental compliance KPIs including air emissions, waste, wastewater risk assessments, soil and groundwater contamination investigation, remediation techniques and projects.
  • Expertise in environmental laws & regulations that drive permit compliance, remediation, clean up requirements & sustainability. Strong project management skills including managing multiple projects, financial accounting of consultant charges etc.,
  • Overall relevant work experience of about 10-12 years, ideally at multi-national organizations, in-depth specialized expertise in managing environmental compliance with a significant portion being within pharmaceutical/healthcare industry, top consulting firms.
  • 10-12 years of experience in a leadership/supervisory/consulting roles. 5-7 years of experience in an environmental compliance / sustainability role & consulting.
  • Good communication skills, proactivity, self-initiator. Ability to operate in a global matrix environment
Desirable:
  • MBA with university degree in engineering, technology, geology, environment or another related natural/technical field. Advanced degree is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of additional languages desirable (i.e. Spanish, Italian, German).
