What would you do? The Site Commissioning & Substation Operations Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and supervising commissioning activities of electrical substations and ensuring reliable and safe substation operations post-energization. The role involves coordinating with design, construction, testing, and utility teams to ensure that all electrical systems meet technical, safety, and regulatory standards.
What are we looking for? o Relevant experience in substation commissioning, testing, or operations (HV / EHV systems preferred). o Exposure to utility-grade substations of UK standard and renewable evacuation systems is desirable. o Knowledge of protection and control systems, SCADA, and communication protocols. o Proficiency with test kits and commissioning tools (OMICRON, Megger, Doble, etc.). o Familiarity with substation automation systems (SAS / IEC 61850). o Understanding of grounding systems, relay coordination, and fault analysis. o Experience with maintenance management software (SAP PM, Maximo, etc.). o B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems or related field) o Strong problem-solving and analytical ability. o Good communication and reporting skills. o Team leadership and cross-functional coordination. o Commitment to safety, reliability, and quality standards.
Roles and Responsibilities: 1. Commissioning Activities o Plan and execute pre-commissioning and commissioning of substation equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, CTs, PTs, isolators, protection relays, and control systems. o Prepare and review commissioning schedules, test procedures, and method statements. o Conduct testing and verification of electrical systems including insulation resistance, ratio test, contact resistance, Tan Delta, and relay functional testing. o Supervise on-site testing teams and coordinate with OEMs, contractors, and clients during commissioning. o Ensure smooth energization and handover of substations to operations teams. 2. Substation Operations & Maintenance o Oversee daily substation operations ensuring safe and reliable power supply. o Monitor substation performance parameters through SCADA and perform fault diagnosis. o Schedule and carry out preventive and corrective maintenance of substation assets. o Manage switching operations, isolation procedures, and work permits in compliance with safety standards. o Support outage management, restoration, and load transfer activities. 3. Technical Documentation & Reporting o Prepare and maintain test reports, as-built documentation, and commissioning certificates. o Update single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and protection coordination charts as per site changes. o Maintain records of maintenance schedules, faults, and equipment history. o Generate periodic performance, reliability, and incident reports. 4. Safety & Compliance o Enforce safety procedures during commissioning and operational activities (arc-flash safety etc). o Ensure compliance with applicable UK standards o Conduct site safety audits, toolbox talks, and ensure proper use of PPE. 5. Coordination & Continuous Improvement o Collaborate with project management, design, and protection teams to resolve technical issues. o Provide technical support during system upgrades and expansion projects. o Recommend improvements in procedures, asset reliability, and operational efficiency. o Support training of site and maintenance personnel on operational and safety practices.
