We are looking for an Engineering Manager who can lead high-performing teams, drive technical excellence, and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of SHL's Talent Intelligence and Assessment platforms.
Role Overview
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of backend, frontend, and QA engineers delivering high-quality, scalable software solutions. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Architecture, and cross-functional business stakeholders to deliver key initiatives such as Talent Intelligence enhancements, Integrations, Reporting Platforms, and Core Assessment Services.
This role requires strong technical depth, people leadership, and a passion for driving engineering excellence in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Team & People Leadership
Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team.
Drive a culture of accountability, collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for engineers.
Create strong succession planning and cross-team readiness.
Technical Leadership
Own end-to-end delivery of complex features and platforms across SHL's products.
Work closely with architects to design scalable, resilient, cloud-native systems.
Ensure engineering best practices: code quality, testing, CI/CD, reliability, observability.
Lead technical reviews, architecture discussions, and design sessions.
Execution & Delivery
Own sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and delivery commitments.
Drive execution excellence-predictable delivery, low defects, and high availability.
Coordinate cross-functional work with Product, TPM, QA, DevOps, and Security teams.
Build and track engineering KPIs: velocity, quality, uptime, SLAs, MTTR, etc.
Platform Ownership & Innovation
Influence technical strategy for Talent Intelligence, Reporting, Integrations or Core Assessments.
Advocate modern engineering practices, automation, and continuous improvement.
Identify opportunities for performance, scalability, and reliability enhancements.
Partner with Engineering Directors/VPs on roadmap, planning, and large-scale initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
8+ years of total experience with at least 2-4 years leading engineering teams.
Strong expertise in one or more backend languages: Go, Java, .NET, PHP, Python.
Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices, API design, and cloud-native architecture.
Experience with AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS), Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform or similar.
Strong grasp of CI/CD, automated testing, observability (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry).
Experience working with relational (MySQL/Postgres) and NoSQL (Redis, Mongo, Elasticsearch) systems.
Leadership Skills
Proven ability to lead engineering teams delivering mission-critical platforms.
Strong decision-making and ability to operate in ambiguity.
Excellent stakeholder communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
Track record of improving engineering processes, developer productivity, and quality.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in HRTech, Talent Intelligence, Assessments, EdTech, or enterprise SaaS.
Exposure to AI/ML-powered products.
Experience managing multiple teams or pods simultaneously.
Familiarity with large-scale integrations (Workday, SAP, Salesforce, ATS/HRIS platforms).
Experience with performance, scalability optimizations, and reliability engineering.
