The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) invites applications to apply for a tenure-track Empire Innovation Professor (Associate Professor) position at Stony Brook University with an expected starting date of Fall 2025.
We are looking for a dedicated scientist with a strong commitment to innovation and collaboration who is excited to join our team as an Empire Innovation Associate Professor. This senior-level position will focus on developing and applying AI methodologies to drive advances in drug discovery and biomolecular design. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to Stony Brooks initiative to leverage AI for scientific discovery, addressing critical societal challenges in biotechnology, clean energy, and emerging technologies.
Responsibilities Include

• Leading a well-funded research program in AI-driven scientific discovery, focusing on multidisciplinary applications within materials and biomolecular design.
• Collaborating with faculty in the Department, the College, and across the campus, including the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS), the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology, and Stony Brooks AI Innovation Institute to develop a center of excellence in Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) and high-performance computing.
• Mentoring and supervising a diverse body of graduate students, fostering a new generation of interdisciplinary AI experts.
• Engaging in service and teaching responsibilities aligned with the Departments educational mission and Stony Brooks strategic research focus.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Bio-engineering, or a closely related field. Distinguished research record in artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning, with demonstrated expertise in applications to biomolecular and/or drug design. Established track record of scholarly achievements, high-impact publications, and significant research funding. Demonstrated leadership in the field with an international reputation for outstanding research.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong foundation in statistical methods, with a focus on their integration with geometry and physics-informed AI techniques. Expertise in applying these methods to advance biotechnology research. Experience in interdisciplinary research, with the potential to extend expertise into energy-related or other strategic priority areas. Proven excellence in teaching and the ability to incorporate cutting-edge research into the curriculum. Evidence of significant industry or academic partnerships and collaborations.

Applied Mathematics and Statistics Description: The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics is home to one of the largest undergraduate programs on campus and is a national leader in training students in applied mathematics and statistics, with a BS program that has been ranked within the top 5 in the USA. The Department has MS and PhD programs with 200-300 graduate students. The Department currently has 25-30 full-time faculty and lecturers, with many award-winning researchers and distinguished faculty. The Department faculty have significant collaborations with interdisciplinary centers on and off campus, including the Institute for AIDriven Discovery and Innovation, the Institute of Advanced Computational Science (IACS), the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology, the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine, the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), Brookhaven National Labs, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
