The Electrical Design Engineer Lead - Automation is responsible for leading the design, development, and implementation of electrical and automation systems for industrial machinery, manufacturing lines, or process automation projects. The role involves overseeing electrical design activities, preparing engineering deliverables, managing a team of designers/engineers, ensuring compliance with standards, and coordinating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality automation solutions.

Prepare
single-line diagrams (SLD)

wiring diagrams

GA drawings

schematics

BOMs
.
Ensure all designs comply with
IEC, IS, NEC, NFPA
, and safety standards.
Perform
load calculations
, cable sizing, breaker selection, and power distribution design.
Review and approve engineering drawings prepared by junior engineers.
2. Automation & Controls
Design and develop
PLC, HMI, and SCADA
logic and architecture.
Ensure correct selection of controllers, I/O modules, communication networks, and protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP).
Lead integration of automation systems with field devices and ensure proper functional logic.
Troubleshoot automation & electrical issues during commissioning.
3. Project Leadership
Lead electrical & automation design activities for multiple projects simultaneously.
Prepare project schedules, allocate tasks, and monitor team performance.
Conduct technical review meetings and present design concepts to management or clients.
Coordinate with
mechanical, software, production, procurement, and quality teams
for seamless execution.
4. Documentation & Compliance
Develop and maintain:
Design specifications
Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
Testing & Commissioning Procedures
Electrical load lists & cable schedules
Ensure all documentation follows industry and customer standards.
Conduct internal design reviews & risk assessments (FMEA, HAZOP if applicable).
5. Testing & Commissioning
Lead
FAT (Factory Acceptance Test)
and
SAT (Site Acceptance Test)
.
Support installation, wiring verification, troubleshooting, and system validation.
Ensure safe and efficient startup of automated systems.
6. Team Management & Mentoring
Guide and mentor junior electrical & automation engineers.
Provide technical training on PLC, drives, design standards, and tools.
Review performance and support skill development.
Technical Skills Required
Strong knowledge of
PLC, HMI, SCADA
programming (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Schneider, etc.)
Expertise in
AutoCAD Electrical / EPLAN
for design.
Power system design: transformers, switchgear, MCCs, relays.
Motion control systems, servo drives, and VFDs.
Industrial communication networks and protocols.
Hands-on experience with sensors, actuators, field instruments.
Knowledge of safety systems (SIL/PL, interlocks, emergency systems).
