This is a senior technical leadership role. You'll take ownership of the electric motor architecture for our eVTOL propulsion system, propelling everything from topology and thermal integration to electromagnetic design and fault strategy. We expect deep technical judgment, hands-on design experience, and the ability to work across disciplines with power electronics, thermal, structures, and systems teams. You'll be responsible for providing our propulsion motor that not only meets performance goals but also integrates cleanly with the aircraft and stands up to the scrutiny of certification. You'll drive decisions, mentor younger engineers, and work directly with the senior leadership to define technology strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the architecture and specification of high-performance electric motors (e.g., axial flux / radial flux) for eVTOL propulsion.
Define motor requirements, including power rating, torque-speed profile, voltage range, cooling strategy, EMI/EMC constraints, and fault tolerance.
Collaborate with inverter and power electronics teams to ensure optimal system performance and safety.
Perform trade studies on electromagnetic, thermal, and structural factors to optimize motor topology.
Work with mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to assure motor designs satisfy weight, efficiency, and manufacturability requirements.
Lead FMEA, safety case development, and certification documentation in alignment with DO-160, DO-311, and other applicable aerospace standards.
Coordinate testing and validation of motors, including lab dyno testing, thermal characterization, and durability testing.
Stay up to date with emerging technologies in motor materials, cooling, insulation, and control strategies to maintain a competitive edge.
Support sourcing strategies, supplier selection, and evaluation of build partners for prototyping and production.
Required Qualifications
PhD or master's degree in electrical engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace, or a related subject.
8+ years of background in motor design and development, including at least 3 years in aerospace, automotive, or high-performance industrial applications.
Extensive experience with high-voltage (600-1000V) and high-power (>100 kW) motor systems.
Extensive knowledge of motor control, electromagnetic design (FEA), and powertrain integration.
Experience with thermal management solutions, including air, liquid, and phase-change cooling systems.
Experience with aerospace certification and safety compliance (DO-160, DO-311, ARP4754A).
Worked in multidisciplinary teams with external suppliers and motor manufacturing partners.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with axial flux motor designs or advanced propulsion technologies.
Exposure to hybrid-electric or distributed propulsion systems.
Working knowledge of inverter architectures
Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and digital twin methodologies.
Hands-on experience with lab validation setups, including instrumentation and high-speed DAQ systems.
