The primary responsibility of an EEG Technician is to conduct EEG tests. These tests involve placing electrodes on the patient's scalp to record brain activity. The technician must ensure that the electrodes are properly placed to obtain accurate results. They also monitor the patient's condition throughout the test and make necessary adjustments to the equipment.
EEG Technicians are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the EEG equipment. They must regularly inspect and calibrate the machines to ensure they are working optimally. In addition, they must adhere to strict hygiene standards to prevent infection.
Role & Responsibilities:
Receive patients and record details concerning the patient, including name, age, sex, diagnosis, and previous history.
Prepare patients for the EEG recording.
Clean the scalp before the recording, focusing on the 22 points where electrodes will be placed.
Apply jelly and place the electrodes in the 22 areas.
Start the EEG recording with special test procedures like Sphenoidal or polygraphic studies.
Disconnect all equipment from the patient after the test procedure.
Explain the procedure to the patient prior to its execution.
Prepare the patient for the EMG and operate the recording parameters.
Perform nerve conduction studies as necessary by applying electrodes at the appropriate muscle and obtaining recordings.
Conduct evoked potentials studies or nerve conduction studies pertaining to sensory, visual, or auditory systems.
Participate and contribute to departmental quality initiatives.
Be aware of departmental performance and objectives.
Carry out data collection/support in data collection.
Adhere to safety norms of the hospital, following both patient and staff safety rules.
Provide healthcare services in patients' residences.
Administer simple prescribed medications.
Assist with clients' personal care activities.
Monitor patients' vital signs, temperature, respiration, intake/output, etc., and report on their condition.
Assist patients with mobility and physical therapies/exercises.
Instruct and counsel patients and families on diet and exercise.
Maintain patients' care records and document provided services.
Provide companionship and basic emotional or psychological support.
Perform domestic and household tasks.
Transport and accompany patients to doctor's offices or hospitals.
Collect routine specimens.
Perform any procedures assigned by the HOD.
Educational Requirements:
Diploma / B.Sc in EEG
Formal training in EEG technology, often as part of a medical technology program.
Certification from recognized bodies like the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
