Job Summary
The Duty Medical Officer is responsible for providing round-the-clock medical care to patients admitted in hospital wards and those presenting to the Emergency Room. The DMO ensures timely assessment, stabilization, treatment, documentation, and coordination with consultants and nursing staff to deliver safe and effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Emergency Room (ER) Duties
Perform rapid assessment, triage, and stabilization of emergency patients
Initiate emergency management as per hospital protocols (ACLS/ATLS where applicable)
Manage medical and surgical emergencies until consultant takeover
Coordinate with on-call consultants, anesthetists, and support services
Arrange for emergency investigations and interpret initial reports
Maintain accurate ER documentation, medico-legal cases (MLC), and consent forms
Communicate patient condition and treatment plans to relatives appropriately
Ward Duties
Conduct regular ward rounds and monitor patient progress
Carry out admission, daily evaluation, and discharge procedures
Implement consultant instructions and treatment plans
Respond promptly to ward emergencies and code calls
Write and update clinical notes, progress sheets, and medication orders
Prepare discharge summaries and referral notes
Ensure continuity of care during shift handovers
Coordination & Administration
Work closely with nursing staff, technicians, and paramedical teams
Ensure adherence to hospital policies, safety standards, and infection control practices
Assist in audits, clinical meetings, and quality improvement initiatives
Maintain confidentiality and ethical medical practice
Participate in duty rotations, night shifts, and emergency calls
Qualifications
MBBS
from a recognized medical college
Valid
Medical Council/State Medical Registration
Certification in
BLS/ACLS
preferred
Experience
0-3 years
of clinical experience (Freshers may apply)
Prior experience in
Emergency Medicine or Ward Management
preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Team-oriented approach with professional conduct
Basic computer skills and familiarity with hospital information systems
