Role Description:

The

Duty Doctor

is the essential

on-call medical and psychiatric authority

, accountable for immediate patient safety and clinical stability across the unit during off-hours. Key roles include:

Acute Crisis Management:

Serve as the primary responder for all medical/psychiatric emergencies, performing rapid risk assessments and initiating stabilization protocols for acute aggression, self-harm, or medical deterioration.

Clinical Oversight & Admissions:

Conduct thorough initial medical and psychiatric reviews for all new admissions and perform urgent follow-up assessments on unstable patients.

Safety & Governance:

Direct the appropriate use of restrictive practices (e.g., seclusion, restraint) adhering strictly to mental health legislation and facility policy.

Communication & Documentation:

Ensure clear, timely clinical handover to the Consultant team and maintain precise, legally sound medical records for all interventions.

Qualifications:

Medical Degree:

Must possess an

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)

or an equivalent primary medical qualification recognized by the relevant medical council.

Registration:

Must have

full and current registration

to practice medicine with the national or state medical council.

Experience:

Typically requires

clinical experience

, often including a successfully completed rotating internship. For psychiatric settings, experience in

Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Psychiatry

is highly preferred. Certification in

Basic Life Support (BLS)

or

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
