The Drawing Takeoff Specialist is responsible for reviewing architectural, structural, mechanical, or fabrication drawings and extracting accurate material quantities, dimensions, and specifications needed for estimating and production. This role supports the estimating, sales, and production teams by converting technical drawings into clear, organized takeoff reports that reflect actual project requirements.
Key Responsibilities1. Drawing Review & Analysis
Interpret architectural, mechanical, and fabrication drawings (PDF, CAD, DWG, DXF).
Identify materials, components, finishes, gauges, and fabrication requirements.
Verify dimensions, tolerances, and construction details against project specifications.
2. Material & Quantity Takeoffs
Produce accurate quantity takeoffs for metals, hardware, assemblies, and fabrication labor.
Break down complex drawings into measurable line items for estimating.
Prepare organized takeoff spreadsheets and summaries for estimator review.
3. Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with estimators, engineers, project managers, and fabricators.
Request clarification on missing or unclear details in drawings.
Provide technical support during bidding, quoting, and project kickoff stages.
4. Cost & Production Support
Assist in pricing labor hours, materials, and fabrication time based on takeoffs.
Identify potential cost savings, design issues, or inconsistencies.
Support production planning by creating cut lists, part counts, or fabrication summaries.
5. Documentation & Data Management
Maintain takeoff files, drawing revisions, and project documentation.
Ensure version control when updated drawings are released.
Organize project data for easy retrieval and auditability.
QualificationsRequired Skills
Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings (fabrication, architectural, mechanical).
Experience with takeoff software (PlanSwift, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Proficient in Excel or Google Sheets.
Strong math skills (geometry, measurement, scaling).
Ability to work under deadlines with multiple projects.
Preferred Skills
Experience in metal fabrication, construction, or manufacturing industries.
Familiarity with CNC, laser cutting, welding, or custom fabrication processes.
Understanding of materials (steel, aluminum, plate, sheet, tubing, extrusions).
Experience supporting estimators or project managers.
