*Job Summary:

The Duty Medical Officer (DMO) is responsible for providing high-quality, immediate medical care to patients, with a specialized focus on Ear, Nose, and Throat conditions. This role involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients in the emergency room and inpatient wards, and providing support to the ENT consultants. The DMO plays a vital role in managing medical emergencies, ensuring smooth hospital operations during their shift, and maintaining continuity of care.

Key Responsibilities



1. Patient Care and Clinical Management:



Initial Assessment

: Conduct a thorough medical history and physical examination of patients presenting with ENT-related complaints or other medical issues.

Emergency Response:

Serve as the first responder for all medical and surgical emergencies, including airway compromise, epistaxis (nosebleeds), trauma, and other critical ENT and general medical conditions.

Treatment Initiation

: Administer appropriate initial treatment, medication, and first aid based on the patient's condition and established hospital protocols.

Inpatient Management

: Monitor the condition of all inpatients, record vital signs, and ensure all orders from consultants are carried out by the nursing staff.

Documentation

: Maintain accurate and detailed patient medical records, including history, examination findings, progress notes, and treatment plans.

ENT-Specific Responsibilitie

s:

Common ENT Conditions

: Manage and treat common ENT problems such as sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media (ear infections), pharyngitis, and laryngitis.

Procedural Skills

: Perform minor procedures like foreign body removal from the ear or nose, nasal packing for epistaxis, and wound care under the guidance of consultants.

Pre and Post-Operative Care:

Assist in the pre-operative evaluation of patients and manage post-operative care, including monitoring for complications and pain management.

Liaison with Specialists

: Coordinate with ENT consultants for patient admissions, transfers, and for patients requiring specialized surgical or medical intervention.

Collaboration and Communication

:

Inter-departmental Coordination

: Collaborate with nursing staff, technicians, and other medical professionals to ensure comprehensive and continuous patient care.

Reporting:

Inform senior consultants about new admissions, patient progress, critical changes in patient status, and abnormal investigation reports.

Patient and Family Education:

Provide clear and compassionate information to patients and their families regarding their diagnosis, treatment plan, and follow-up care instructions.

Shift Handover:

Participate in daily rounds and shift handover meetings to ensure a smooth transition of care and effective communication with colleagues.

Administrative and Safety Duties

:

Hospital Protocol

: Ensure strict compliance with all hospital policies, infection control measures, and safety standards.

Patient Records

: Ensure all patient records, including admission and discharge summaries, are completed accurately and in a timely manner.

Medical Equipment

: Ensure the safe and effective use of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.

Audits and Quality Improvement

: Participate in hospital audits and quality improvement initiatives as required.

Qualifications and Skills:



Educational Qualification

:
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
Valid registration with the relevant Medical Council.

Experience

:
Minimum of [e.g., 1-3] years of experience as a Duty Medical Officer or in a similar clinical role, preferably in a multi-specialty or ENT hospital setting.
Clinical Skills:
Strong diagnostic and clinical judgment skills.
Proficiency in emergency medicine and a solid understanding of basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols.
A good understanding of ENT anatomy, pathology, and common medical and surgical treatments.

Soft Skills

:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and other medical software.
