Designer cum Senior PD Merchant

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Designer cum Senior PD Merchant with a strong background in fabric sourcing and development to join our garment manufacturing team. The ideal candidate should have a creative eye for design, a deep understanding of fabric types, and proven experience in sourcing materials as per buyer specifications and market trends. This role is a critical link between design innovation and execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Design & Product Development

Develop product ranges based on seasonal trends and buyer mood boards.

Create initial design concepts and fabric stories for buyer presentations.

Collaborate with sampling and design teams to ensure proto/sample development aligns with buyer expectations.

Study trend forecasts and create mood boards, color palettes, and silhouette ideas.

Fabric Sourcing & Development

Source suitable fabrics locally and internationally based on buyer requirements and garment categories.

Coordinate with fabric mills, suppliers, and agents to get samples, swatches, and lab dips.

Evaluate fabric quality, hand feel, construction, GSM, and cost feasibility.

Maintain a well-organized fabric library for ongoing and future developments.

Buyer Coordination

Understand buyer tech packs, BOMs (Bill of Materials), and quality standards.

Share design ideas, fabric options, and sample updates with buyers for approval.

Participate in buyer meetings and presentations.

Sampling & Approvals

Ensure timely development of proto, fit, and SMS samples.

Follow up on lab dips, strike-offs, and fabric approvals.

Coordinate closely with sampling, CAD, and pattern teams.

Costing & Feasibility

Work on preliminary garment costing along with merchandisers.

Ensure fabric and trim sourcing aligns with price targets without compromising on quality.

Team Collaboration

Work with cross-functional teams including sampling, production, and quality to execute product development smoothly.

Guide junior designers or PD team members as required.

Key Requirements:

Education: Degree/Diploma in Fashion Design, Textile Design, or related field.

Experience: 8-10 years in a similar role within the garment export industry.

Fabric Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of woven and knit fabrics, dyeing techniques, prints, finishes, and current trends.

Software Skills: Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office.

Buyer Exposure: Experience working with international buyers/brands and understanding their design aesthetics and quality standards.

Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for buyer interaction and vendor coordination.

Travel: Willingness to travel for fabric sourcing, fairs, or buyer meetings.
